Hi everyone, I'm new here and admire your efforts to keep these great bikes on the road.
I loved mine and had some great adventures on it. But it's time to wave it goodbye and
let someone get a donor for their winter project before the weather turns. Apologies for the
long and detailed post but it saves time repeating on the phone.
Cosmetically it's rubbish, it was a rat-bike long ago. It has been SORNed for a long time.
Prior to 'storage' it ran well and tracked true. It has not been run prior to placing this advert.
There are too many worn/aged parts and it needs too much TLC to make it roadworthy and
pass MOT. So it has come to this and she has enough useful parts to be sold whole as a
parts donor.
HISTORY : 1FU, manufactured 3/1985, raced in Castrol 6hr Race (production spec race series)
by a Yamaha dealership in Australia. I bought it with just over 2000 miles on the clock and had
great adventures on it including wet, red, mud roads beyond the Daintree River
Brought it with me to the UK in 1988 and had further adventures around England and northern
Europe. It performed solidly until sidelined by a new bike in 2002 and hasn't been run since 2004.
SPEC : Oceania model has no important differences to the UK spec. Anti-noise and air pollution
regs were stricter in Oz than the UK at the time but no differences in airbox/carbs/ignition.
Has all frame and engine ID plates, UK log book, MOTs with mileage and SORN certs. 2 keys.
CONDITION : As stated, rat-bike ! Most of it has suffered ageing, wear, scrapes, gouges, fracture
or corrosion. Plastics are all broken, gouged or fractured mountings. Many of these can be fixed
but they'll need more than a respray. Headlight absent (stone broke lens). Superficial rust/oxidation
to engine, frame and body parts. Seat needs work (base is good, foam needs extra padding, then
recovering with new vinyl). Hydraulic lines, reservoir rubbers and brake caliper seals are all past
their sell-by date. Tyres are good enough to keep the wheels off the ground
USEFUL PARTS :
Engine : Unmodified. Ran fine prior to storage - always revved out cleanly and was a sweet unit.
Have not restarted it as wary of causing damage from lack of lubrication due to oil
draining away/congealing. Compression check done not long before retirement - all over
140 except one piston (either 2 or 3) was ~130. Radiator is intact and has maintained
full level of coolant with no sign of corrosion in the fluid/cap.
Carbs : Unmodified. Inlet rubbers seem intact but this bike is 29 years old. Not stored properly,
so they will be full of gum/lacquer. Good fuel consumption and performance prior to that.
Exhaust : Has a later models 4 into 1. Headers intact but rust is at usual places at pipe junction.
Transmission : Gearbox aged but holding all gears. Clutch plates were beginning to slip on full
load, so they and the chain (dried out old O ring) are junk.
Brakes : Worked well prior to retirement. Old seals/diaphragms/lines will need to be junked.
Discs at or approaching wear limit at the front. Early 'ventillated' type.
Wheels : Intact, true, no dents, held pressure. Front is of course the 16" hoop. Tyres good enough
to get to an MOT test centre or to wheel bike around the garage but otherwise, junk.
Fuel tank : Fine rust inside and some rusty patches outside. Worst at the weld at the rear next to
the seat. It doesn't leak. Fuel pump and gauge worked at last use. Fuel cap works and
uses same key as ignition. Fuel lines and filter will be junk.
Steering : Handlebars, yokes and steering head all intact. Head bearings probably junk now.
Forks : Sliders and stanchions straight and intact. Springs Hagon, probably sagged out now.
Shock : Hagon, has had little use since install. The suspension linkages are worn - shimming was
not effective - suggest machining to allow sleeve insert or oversize bolt.
Swingarm : Silver metal one. Straight and intact. Lube nipple fitted.
Frame : Much superficial rust. Left frame rail under tank/seat area collects water and has rusted
through. Looks like an easy repair by welding prior to preparation and respray of it all.
General : Clocks/instrument cluster are intact and working. Fairing bracket is intact. Mirrors are
non-standard. Footpegs and controls all intact, obviously some slop in linkages.
Has side and centre stand. Indicators and brake lights work.
Extras : Daytona clipons. Scottoiler. Original Yamaha workshop manual. Harris fairing lowers in pearl.
I think these were for a later model as the halves don't mate underneath the engine. A small
bracket allows secure fitting. Hence, little use and in very good condition.
PRICE : £ 350. Offers considered. Sold as is, buyer collects, South East London.
