There are a few spares or repair type sales on ebay but the prices seem a bit rich to me. Try to find one with good panels, a decent exhaust & rear shock. Make sure it ticks over smoothly & runs ok.

60% of the panels are usable, decent exhaust, runs sweet (petrol dripping from 1 carb, stuck float? Potter tubes, rear shock cruddy. Possibly overpriced, looking at what else there is.

Pitted tubes......darn auto correct. Looks like the oil seal had gone on the drive shaft.

Drive shaft? Output shaft the sprocket goes on? Don't be in a rush to part with your hard earned. There will be others.

I see a few about for decent money, but they are always miles away. What is the going rate and what realistically can I expect. One I viewed had decent tank, so that was a big plus.

It's really hard to put a general price on a bike just because it is a certain model. Personally I wouldn't pay much more than £3-400 for a project bike which probably describes all of my FZ's & probably also expalins why none of them have been touched in years! A good bike with average mileage (sub 50K), good panels with no or very little damage, a good exhaust system standard Yamaha or after market, a rear shock that works, forks that aren't pitted/weeping, engine that runs smoothly would be something to aim for & I would want £1000 upwards for such a bike depending on its condition. there are obviously tyres, chain & sprockets, paintwork, service history, brakes etc to take into consideration too which in my eyes would be the difference between a £1000 FZ & a £2000 FZ. Any more than that & it would have to be a bloody good one!

Have now been offered said bike for more realistic price, MOT'd with a few spares.
TBH this would be good for a rolling restoration and modification project. It's a 2mg if it was a early bike I'd be looking to restore it to 100% original. I'm also looking for a investment bike FZ (early) Mille, Fire blade, YZF, FZR etc.
Going for a second look this weekend.

The one thing that I would definitely recommend checking is the output shaft bearing. If the output shaft oil seal is knackered then you MAY be lucky and replace it without dismantling the engine, but if the output shaft bearing is knackered then it is definitely a complete engine strip. You will have to move the bike back and forth or ride it to find out. Good luck.

I would check that the chain isn't too tight and if the bearing has gone then you should hear or feel some knocking coming from the gearbox as it's rotated.
