Hey guys, I just bought a 1987 FZ750 and I need to get it running. The ignition wires are pretty beat up and looks like this guy has tried to splice together. He said it has been two years since running. The Battery is totally dead, but when jumper cables attached all of the electricals seem to work but it won't turn over. Any advice on first things to check? The is about a half gallon of fuel that has sat in the tank for the last two years. Suggestions on cleaning out the tank? Basically I have a deal with the guy that I will keep it for a little while and try to get it to start or bare minimum crank. If no luck I can bring it back to him for full refund. At what point do I know this thing is going to take alot of TLC to get it running? Bad CDI? Thanks for all of your help, picture posted with this thread. Nick

How many wires to the ignition switch? 3 or 4?
Have you checked all the fuses (there's 3 or 4 small ones in one fusebox, 1 big one in a different one, both by the battery)

3 Wires from the ignition, blue, green, and red if i can remember right. fuses sound like a good plan. is there any way it could be the CDI if all fuses look good and i fix up the wiring harness?

It could be, but it could be any part of the ignition system.
Your best bet will be to check for sparks. But if you can't crank it over with the starter, the chances are the CDI isn't the issue.
According to the wiring diagram I have, with a 3 wire ignition you don't connect any of them to give power to the bike. Just disconnect the ignition at the socket. I can't see that this is right though.
I would recommmend connecting all three wires together to supply power to the bike.

Hi Nick,
Is your bike the one that was advertised on Gumtree in Irvine? If so, I tried to buy it but the seller never called me back. If you don't get it going, let me know as I would be interested in taking it off your hands if it is a 1FN model which is what I am after. Cheers James

Irvine? Im in Denver, CO. The guy I got it from wasn't advertising it as far as I know. I work with him and he was just going to donate it. The bike is super clean I just need to spend some time with it and get it running. The problem is definately in the wiring. If I don't get it going would you still be interested?

The best advice I can give you is that the electronics on these are pretty robust and rarely fail.
If you have no sparks, it's more likely to be a wiring issue. Carefully check all connections associated with the ignition and do your best convince that they are all okay before you start swapping parts.

if you are sure the usual things are ok , check the wiring diagram if you have one , part of the starter wiring goes through the turn signal relay { two blue and white wires ] I think you can bypass the relay to try it but I think the starter is live all the time but you can,t start the bike until the ignition is on .

Thanks for all the suggestions fellas! Luckily I ended up taking the old battery out and just giving it a shot using jumper cables from the car directly to the battery connections....IT WORKED. It turned over like a dream and all of my lights and other electronics seem to be working as well. Just got married so I am finding small amounts of time to work on it in the evenings. That said, I'm going to pick up a new battery today, then start pulling plugs and checking spark. If I have good spark then my plan is to repair the red ignition wire with a good connector and some heat shrink, empty out the old nasty 2-year old gas and try to clean out the tank the best I can of any rust or nasty stuff that may be in there. I think I have a good shot at getting it running this weekend. If it starts up this weekend then this buy wont be a waste of my $300 bucks.

Hi Nick, oops - I should have checked your location. Denver CO is a bit far for me. I am in London UK :-) Good luck getting it going - looks like you are nearly there. Great looking bike. Cheers James
