Hi All
Since I have gathered loads of FZ spares, I have decided to build a spare FZ as a sort of wet bike.
I have a Thunderace swingarm and and R6 rear wheels.
I have already managed to fit the arm but as I haven't fitted the engine yet I was wondering if anyone had a easy way of centralising the wheel in the arm.

I would be inclined to fit the engine Gaz to give you something to work from regards sprocket alignment. I used an engineers rules (stainless thing) as a straight edge & ran it across the face of my front sprocket back to the rear sprocket. Once I knew where the wheel needed to be in relationship to the front sprocket I had spacers made for either side of the wheel & had a few mm skimmed from the brake caliper bracket as I recall.

I used a cheap 1' spirit level with a laser index in it - the length was right to clamp it to the rim and have the dot shining on the swingarm pivot. Absolute accuracy not an issue so long as it's the same at either end. I don't know about the Thunderace arm but the modded FZR1000 one I used is symetrical (many later ones aren't) but I can't see that being an issue anyway, so long as the dot is the same distance from the pivot points on the frame. I agree with Graham - fit the engine first.

Thanks guys, have since fitted the engine and measured up the spacers.
Just another question!
I have another set of R6 forks to fit and wondered if anyone knew the distance between the forks on 1000 Exup Yokes. Just that this would be easier than carrying out a stem swap with R6 /FZ parts.
Cheers

Have now managed to fit the wheel with new spacers, (pic's to follow). Now looking at crash protection.
On my number 1 bike I have the crank end protectors, but just want to try a cheaper alternative with crash bungs.
Has anyone fitted these to the FZ and how?
Cheers
Gaz

You will struggle to find suitable mountings for crash bungs mate. I welded brackets on my frame rails but not entirely happy with them. Harris did some ally brackets that wrap around the lower casings but they are rare now. Be good to have a pair to copy. I have made something similar using Fireblade foot peg guards but not finished yet.

I drilled through the frame rails and then welded a sleeve through and boted on standard (D&G I think) bobbins! Simples

I had a set of the Harris protectors on my race FZ and I think they may have contributed to the frame twisting during a big crash. I bought a pair of Thunderace crank end caps a couple of weeks back (all FZ/FZR engines use the same caps), machined the outside faces flat and gave them, along with some some 16mm thick alloy discs to a local welding shop to try and make a sort of poor man's billet end cap out of them. I'll post some photos if they look good.

Hi Gaz, Sorry I cant get a picture at the mo, as I have given the bike to my mate to race this year (he lives 180 miles away!) So wont get to see him or the bike until we go testing in a few weeks time! But basically, I copied the way the front engine mounting is bolted through the frame rail! I hope this helps!

Cheers Keith. I'll have a look as I reckon I know what you've done. Now have the pic's of the wheel in the 'Ace Arm. If anyone needs any sizes for this conversion just let me know.

Well I've at least managed to finish the bike for this year. Still working on the spare bike, I hope to have it finished before the season is over!
