I just bought my 88 fz for $200 and am pretty excited about it. When I fist got the bike home I thought the engine was seized but when I pulled the clutch cover there was a small chain link( assumed cam chain link) in the bottom of the case. So if I'm not mistaken this is an interference motor. The engine spins to a certain point and stops that should be a valve correct? What I really need is torque specs for things like the head, crank rods, and case bolts. In relations to the work I'm to proceed with and a good place to find new vital motor parts such as main and rod bearings and piston rings
I'm a mechanic for cars at a local shop but I've never worked on a bike before

If you're serious about doing this buy a Clymer manual; they're on eBay for about £20 and have all the relevant info. The only place for engine parts is Yamaha but gaskets, rings, shells etc for a simple refresh will probably come to $1000 before you start looking for valves, pistons, rods etc. I'd buy another engine ($100?) and rebuild it in the original cases to keep the engine & frame numbers right if I were you. Good luck :-)

Okay so find a clymer manual and finding another motor might be an issue for me at least. I don't think these bikes where very popular state side that and this is an old bike I have only seen random gubbins here and there I'll keep my eyes open. for now I need to take the head off and see if the valves and pistons made forbidden love is there a specific bolt removal procedure? Or is it just star pattern from middle out?
