i'm trying to take the camshafts out, and the e-3 cap is stuck. the lower left bolt was dry and rusted, so i'm thinking the dowel pin is too. any ideas on how to get this out? i don't want to pry it out with a screwdriver and damage the head/cams...

Hey Bud, the best trick I learned is to heat up the area and then melt candle wax all over it. Let it dry and then try again. Repeat if necessary. The liquid wax gets in to the cerevisiae, when it cools down it become solid both nudging and lubing the stuck part. It's how I removed seized steel coolant lines from an aluminium manifold.

wow I've never heard that one Terrencelp. not sure the wax would flow in to the locating dowel hole though as the caps are a flush fit over the face of the cam bed ? I would be tempted (rightly or wrongly) to keep tapping it with my very smallest bashing stick (hammer). Get something small enough to fit under the top of the cap so you can tap it upwards with a hammer perhaps ? I like hammers. ;D ;D Remember, if it can't be fixed with a hammer you've got an electrical problem. Good luck, let us know what worked. Oh yeah, welcome to the forum. ;D

Just realised you are phatty81 on the .com forum. Still think your best bet is a hammer. ;D

I'm found! yeah, that's me. i posted on .com first, but then i joined here because it seems to be seeing more activity lately. finally getting started on disassembly to rebuild the top end and maybe the bottom end depending on my confidence level when i get there. i'm concerned about the transmission, so i'd like to get a look at it while the engine's out of the bike. BUT...i gotta get this bearing cap off first. it's REALLY stuck. i've just soaked it in WD-40 for the second time this morning. i've hit it with a rubber mallet from in front and behind. i gently tapped it with a regular hammer in the same way. i took a flathead screwdriver and tapped upward from underneath, which made a little nick in the cap, but didnt' budge it. i grabbed it tentatively with vise grips and pulled. no luck. i fed a length of speaker wire underneath it and yanked on that a few times. nada. the wax trick looks cool, but i don't want to blow torch the head...it's covered in oil, and i've never used a blow torch before...haha i'm just trying to figure out how i can apply force from underneath without damaging anything...hmmmm.....

use something a bit blunter than a screw driver to tap upwards from underneath. I have a selection of extension bars from various old socket sets for such occasions.

graham, you're a life-saver.
first, i removed all the other bearing caps and the intake camshaft and sprocket. i thought this might remove some stress from the e-3 cap. still very stuck. so, i took your suggestion and found a ~4" long piece of 3/4" bar with a plastic cap on one end. actually, it was a spool-adapter that came with a cheap rear race stand on ebay. anyway, i put the plastic end under the front edge of the cap, beat on the other end with a rubber mallet a few times, and voila! it popped right up. a few alternating taps on the front and back with a claw-hammer and it was freed.
sorry for boring you with such an inane problem, but as a "noob", i'm extremely grateful for your help.
i'm taking pictures at every step along the way, so hopefully i'll have a nice photo-log of the restoration to post when i'm done.

Jesus H Christ, no one is more surprised than me at that, I was only joking ! ;D What I forgot to say was that I would be using a metal hammer & not a rubber mallet as it really needs the sudden, sharp shock of metal on metal but glad I didn't or I would look slightly foolish right now. ;D You know what ? I think you would have shifted it eventually without my advice but isn't it nice to share a problem with like minded people who have been in a similar situation ? I look forward to the resto' thread as that section is a bit void of content to date.

hahaha. i'll take your next suggestion with a grain of salt, then! this thing was NOT coming out with at least a little coercion from a hammer-like object though. ;D

Good to see you go it off, I've had to buy many parts due to my lack of patience when working on old stuff. But for the wax trick you only need a propane touch and heating that spot wouldn't be too bad as it sees high temp when operating. Oil will burn off, then get it blasted clean since your looking at redoing the head. Next time if you get the chance run this in your oil before taken apart your motor. It will help clean and remove crap inside the engine - Marvel Mystery Oil www.marvelmysteryoil.com/
