Hi, I have a 1985 fn model fz750 and was swapping the clutch whern it struck me that the gasket on the cover may be asbestos? Does anyone know for sure the engine gaskets on these yamahas was not asbestos? I know its just a cover but I used to be a fitter and we used these caf( compressed asbestos fiber) joints in those days. If it is I will need to take care cleaning the kit used etc. Cheers

this is a very late reply to your question re: asbestos gaskets , just a heads up on asbestos, be safe at all times,
do not worry to much about it if it was asbestos it would probably be a composite, although just one partical is harmfull it would be over 30 years before diagnosis,
the process for working with asbestos: there are three main asbestos criteria, white asbestos which contained cement products as a binding agent, which was in general use uptill the mid 80's was a composite used in many household items, ie: vynal flooring, toilet cisterns (the black bakolite looking type) then there was the composite roofing corrogated sheets and flat sheets etc, when broken you would see fibers showing within the material, it it iasnt damaged it is reasonably safe left alone as long as sealed (painted) the real dangerous asbestos is the blue asbestos as long as you wear a full disposable protective suit, have a shower tent to wash off any contamiates after working in that area which you would have cordoned off to stop particals floating out side into the atmosphear, wear apropriate gloves face mask up to the lastest standards rules of handling asbestos etc, double bag the suspect contaminates sealed, disposed of in a double door skip or locker ( to protect the contaminates from escaping from the sealed skip/locker ) then dispose of in government approved location, NOT LANDFILL , or household bins which could cause disposal and contaminate others ,
all asbestos should be treated with care,if unsure as an expert there will be some in your area, it will very expesive to contract any asbestos removal company as the regs rely on strict rules, some i have mentioned above,
as asbestos has benn banned in the uk from the mid 80's it is still around, safest way to deal with it if it is static paint it, if it is broken seal it again with paint, do not drill it without taking care to prevent dust particals, water down tape over before dilling etc, careshould be used in all cases as to not inhale yourself or others, the law is very strict, it can take upto 30 years for signs to emurge if you have contacted the illness, same as coal miners etc, aaaaasbestos particals are similer to fishing hooks to put it in simple terms one these hooke embed in the lungs they will never escape, they becom trapped, the hook shape is very similar to glass wool which could possibly the next contaminate to be outlawed in the uk, does the very same as asbestos, so there you have it, as for gaskets within the motorcycle world i very much doubt asbestos of any harm would be used in the eighties as it was banned in the uk, it was widely used in brakes shoes /pads gaskets as you mention, also as oil seals etc, it no long is used in these products, superceeded by a substance called superlux plus other names would be found for it,
there shouild be no harmfull contaminates used in motorcycles from the 80's, so do not worry,i would be more worried about toxic exhaust gases from unleaded petrol / heavy oil, (diesel), unleaded is more harmfull then the petrol companies let on, so to finally end the safety , use a sealant or paper gasket, i would recommend yamalube, all the big four sell their own silicone based flexible gasket sealer, not cheap but worth it, other makes are available, have to protect the liable laws lol ps if your worried about the gasket be more worried about the clutch plates theres more than the gasket, best regards, keep it sunny side up

Hmm, anyone know about teh exahsut gaskets used on these. Removed mine the other day to replace and two of them had to be pulled out in pieces resulting in clumps of teh fluffy material coming away. I kind of assumed they wouldn't be asbestos but now I'm wondering..
Cheers

the regulations realting to the use of asbestos : the govt banned import and the use of asbestos in the 80's, as for what you found getting your gaskets out, i would'nt be to worried unless you snorted it,it usually takes around 20.30 years to show up,and that's if you work day in day out with the stuff, for the 1985 they used a substance asbestolux which was a mixture of cement and other harmless fibres, when replacing the exhaust gaskets there are two main one's on offer copper or fibre, if your unsure buy the copper one's, Jamie you have nothing to worry about if two where broken, hope this helps, if you come across anything your not to happy about wet it first to keep dust down,
