I am going to use this as an ongoing update on my restoration progress of an '86 FZ750. I bought her in a non-working condition for 200 USD. After restoring and building 2 other single cylinder bikes ... it's time to step it up. However, I am already realizing that there might be a bit more than I expected. I also don't have a ton of time ... so it takes me a while. (Travel for a living)
Goal #1: Get her running smoothly
Goal #2: Get her up to spec and have her run as good as she once did
Goal #3: Put her on the road
Goal #4: Polish her up and upgrade a few things
Goal#1: So here we go...
Fuel tank was completely disconnected and missing bolts. Sludge in the tank and rusted heavily. Loaded this baby down with vinegar and BB's (after taking out the fuel). Let her soak for a week and shook her around in the morning on my way to work and when I got home. After a week, I poured her out and ran water, baking soda and simple green through the tank to prep her for coating. Sprayed WD40 in her and wrapped her up ... will post coat photos later. The fuel tank lid was in terrible condition. I purchased a new one and am waiting to put it back on. I bought a new gasket for the leveler and a new petcock to finish her off once she is coated. I'll brush the edges of the tank with a wire brush and spray a bit of white Rustoleum to make it look clean. The coat will fill any pinhole leaks from the rust and ensure the inside of the tank doesn't rust. The Rustoleum will keep her safe going forward.
So, I noticed the clutch was not working very well and I pulled the lid off and noticed there was no clutch fluid. I tried to bleed the clutch and got nothing no matter how much I tried. I took the slave off and was surprised to find it had seized up and was in terrible shape. Drained the remaining clutch fluid after removing the slave and pulled the slave and master for a complete rebuild. Little did I know that the slave was seized and was useless. Purchased a used one in good shape off ebay. Will rebuild it and clean the cylinder up in a parts cleaner. Pictures later.
New (used) slave
Ready for rebuild:
Next was the carb. Looked terrible. Drained the bowls and it smelled awful. Pieces rusted and already stripped screws from previous owner. Found labels on the throttle and choke cables ... looks like someone tried to clean/rebuild it. Everything was just a headache. Hoping I'll catch a break. Here is an example of what I was up against:
After cutting and drilling some of the screws out. It was apart but still rusty. Cleaned them up and it looks better.
Clear coated a few parts to ensure they don't rust later. Cleaned the carbs and hoping they'll be fine. I might completely rebuild them if I have engine trouble but they look fine for now and I just need them to get the engine running. Here is the finished product. I replaced all the screws. Make sure they don't seize.
I've also bought new spark plugs and drained the radiator and removed it to replace the spark plugs. I'll take pictures of that later.
Next Steps:
I've got some new braided hoses, fuel filter, missing tank bolts, and a few other misc parts to hook up when the carb and tank back on. I'll put the clutch back together. Spray some WD40 in the spark plug slots and pour a spoon full of oil after changing it. Put the radiator back on it. Before I start her up... I intend to turn the engine over once pushing her. I want to try to make sure nothing is seized. I'll also be running seafoam in the oil and with the fuel I put in it to clean her up a bit more. Let's pray she runs for a minute. I am concerned that the fuel pump might not be working BUT I've got a possible solution for it.
After that is a compression test, carb tune and cylinder timing. Feel free to check back for more later.
