Back in the day , The old MOT tester used to ride road legal Trial bikes and I was under the impression all you needed was a Rear Brake light for a MOT ( no speedo) He correcterd me and said there is no such thing as a Daytime MOT , its just a MOT As per a regular MOT if lights etc are fitted etc then they must be working
Popped to see the local Motorcycle MOT Tester today and had a interesting conversation.
All you need for a MOT is a rear reflector and a horn ( a Beep , Beep type and not a Honk honk type uncless your bike is Vintage ).
No need for a Speedo , lights etc , mudguards just the above a horn and a rear reflector and a number plate. He did advise having a rear brake light for common sense riding so nobody runs into the back ofyou
I asked the question what if I'm pulled over by Plod and have no speedo
His reponse was its got a MOT , thats what you asked me & thats what you need for a MOT.
So a bit more digging required regarding the Speedo to see if its a traffic offence
Please feel free to chip in and advise

I had my race FZ road legal for testing purposes a few years back and this is a minefield. As I read the regs, all you need for an MOT is a continuous sounding horn and, providing you have no 'running lights', you don't need any light at all, but... Every place I had it tested interpreted the rules differently. It's best to decide where you're going to have it tested and ask the tester what he wants to see. Some interpret the rules as saying that if you have a brake light you need all the lights and insist you remove the brake light before they'll issue the certificate (personally, I think this is a misreading of the rules). The local Traffic Police told me that a stop light and a speedo are legal requirements. I could only find one insurance company who would cover it and they were expensive; I made sure I specifically listed EVERY single modification I had made to the bike (there wasn't any part that was stock and the list ran to two pages). Good luck :-)

Good point about insurance , had the same with my modified YZF750 with a T-ace engine flatslides and aftermarket brakes, headlights & the other bit & bobs
I have a digital combi Tacho with a MPH readout which I was going to use but was looking at a 50mm mech speedo but cant get the drive unit on the front wheel & forks combo and the cable run is too tight at the back of the speerd needs a 45 deg angle drive , hence trying the YZF 750 clocks
Same as yourself really, want a road legal bike to get a set-up and a bit of use , the probem I have at the moment is the headlighs I would like a running light just to "be seen" so thats another trip to the MOT tester for advise
