Background - bike has not run for many years, i have cleaned carbs (all bowls off jets out soaked in homemade agitator & reassembled, did not disassemble the banks). Original project post here: fz750.proboards.com/post/8439/threadI am Very new to fixing bikes. My Issue, Upon maiden start up when i received the bike (remember has not started unknown number of years, i found that the carbs was spitting fuel from the overflow tube, so with a a lot of google & you-tube i decide to give cleaning them a try. I did not change any settings in this cleaning (or t least i do not think so) so once cleaned and reassembled and installed to bike i try to start it.... I am experiencing an awful lot of cranking just to get it to fire/start, and i mean a lot of cranking. the plus side I know it runs, as i have has it running but it takes a VERY long time for it to turn over and actually kick. Any tips on what I could get it to kick without draining batteries?? What are the common tuning issues and fixes for theses types of bikes? Please any constructive information is greatly appreciated. Thank heaps Also when it does fires it runs and idles by itself, please see the video...

It sounds like it is idling with higher revs than I would expect, can you confirm how high the revs are when idling? The reason that I'm asking is because the bike should idle on the pilot jets that control the throttle on low to midrange revs and if these are blocked then it could be the reason why the bike won't fire very easily. If that is the case then you will have to open up the carbs again and make doubley sure that the very small holes in the pilot jets are unblocked. At least this would be a good place to start. Best of luck.

As above, jets out & cleaned thoroughly. Sounds a bit rough to me. If you're 100% that carbs have no crap in them then I would check compression next.

Ok.. YES 100% the carbs are clean, once it starts it run yes rough but runs. Coils tested and in spec New Plugs, Leads and Caps Tested Spark = yes all cylinders do spark when it cranks.. Solenoid works, and connections are tight.. My issue is getting it to run. As when i hit the starter it sound like the starter just spins, and very now and then it will crank.. here is a video for more understanding of the Cranking issue.. Thanks

I'm not finding it easy from your video to work out what's happening but can only presume that your starter motor is spinning upon pressing the starter button but it is not spinning the crank. If so, you will need to take the starter motor off and have a look at the splines on the starter motor and also the starter idler gear inside the engine to inspect the teeth. If you find it difficult to inspect the teeth on the gear inside the engine then it may be possible to turn the gear by removing the crankshaft end cover and inserting a bolt (and nut) to the end of the crank, and locking the bolt to the crank. You can then turn the crank which should turn the starter idler gear to inspect the teeth. Another thing to check is that the starter motor is working correctly. As for the rough running, when you get it started it may be worth checking the carb balance to ensure that all of your carbs are running together. Best of luck. Wheaty

It sounds like it's not spinning the engine as Alan has said. Remove, inspect, clean, restore, replace starter motor.

Thanks guys.. well i removed the starter motor to check the idler gear teeth and no teeth are missing. The starter motor teath look ok to me.. your thoughts So is the next step to try and inspect the statter clutch or has to be engine out?

You could earth the starter motor and press the starter button to ensure that the starter motor is working fine first (although by the sounds of it, it is ok). If that's ok then try to move the starter idler gear inside the engine, if it moves easily then you've got an engine internal problem which will require a complete engine strip. When the starter idler gear is turned then it should turn the crank over so if it isn't then there is your problem. Best of luck. Wheaty

The idler gear moves 1 way but if tried the other way it feel like it is catching the starter gear.. is this correct?

Hiya Andy From what I can phathom out, it looks like the starter clutch Is a one-way operation which would tally up with what you have mentioned above. Therefore I would still continue with checking the starter motor operation before ripping the engine apart. I'll try to upload a pic of the inspection of the starter motor for you to help.
