Hi. 50 years old. Have restored and owned many different bikes through the years. Now finished with my first FZ 750 - 1986. Am satisfied with everything but the suspension , which I haven’t figured out yet. Will browse the forum for advice- especially regarding the front forks.

Hello & thanks for joining. Without fitting forks from a different bike I bought progressive springs from Hyperpro to match my weight with fresh oil which really helped. I would expect the rear shock to be fairly inadequate after all these years so anything new would be an improvement.

Thank you. I changed the oil in the fork before I put it back on the bike, but it’s way to soft. I will try to find a set of Hyperpros as a first step. For the rear suspension, I reckon I hav to find a proper aftermarket shock.

Doesn't have to be hyper pro that's just what I bought for mine. My forks aren't original. They are FZR600. My rear shock is Hagon which is classed as a budget unit but it still cost me £400!

On the subject of rear shocks - what else fits? e.g. from a newer model yamaha or other jap make. After a year on the XJ550 it's the FZ's turn again for an MOT and the current shock is somewhat corroded.

Just put a YSS rear shock on mine £290 from Firefox racing, takes 3 weeks from ordering to delivery, tell them your weight in riding kit and they'll send it to you with the pre load already set.

Sounds good.. Have you notice any improvement to handling yourself?

Sounds good.. Have you notice any improvement to handling yourself? Yes, it's loads better than the original, but the original had done 58,000 miles and leaked oil. The spring is harder than the original and it's well damped. It fitted straight on, just had to wait 3 weeks from ordering it.
