The rear 130/80/18 roadrider on my bike has cracked sidewall although only a 2013 date and atleast 4mm tread! I fear it will fail MOT. I have spotted a cheap Metzelar roadtec 140/70/18 but it's a radial (I have a BT45 up front). I'm pretty sure I'm not a good enough rider to notice any handling issues with a radial rear and bias belt front - any thoughts?

I think the Avons are a bit prone to cracking, although they are decent tyres. Legally you can fit a radial on the back with a crossply front, or bias ply front - but not the other way round. I doubt you'll notice too much, I think I used a combination like this some years ago. I've got Michelin pilot active tyres on mine, they've got quite a lot of life left, but the rear is so narrow ! - some 130s are wider than others eg. the 130 80 18 road rider is meant to be 137mm wide, I think my rear Michelin is 130mm . . . I was thinking of fitting road rider tyres on my FZ, what do you think of them ? There's space either side of the rear tyre to fit a 150, but that rim is so narrow at 3 inches, you need 3.5 rims for the 150's at a minimum - damn

Hi Nick
I doubt I'm as brave enough to push any tyre if I'm honest so it's difficult for me to give a valuable judgement on the Avon - but I wouldn't get another simply on the basis of the sidewall cracking - it has loads of tread and is not very old really. I did buy a part worn pilot active 130/70 but when it arrived it looked tiny - even the tread width was 20mm less than the RoadRider and the diameter 40mm less compared to what it should have been - about 25mm. So anyway I found the Metzeler on SportBikeShop for 46 quid - but I may have had the last one as it's no longer listed..
Cheers J

Cheers Jamie. Hell that was a good price on that tyre ! It looks like I might keep the standard wheels now, I've bought a standard 1FN exhaust system, I'm not a standard, purist type of owner, but I do like the early bike's look. It seems you have to cut the centre stand mounts off to fit a different swingarm and matching linkage - I'm not sure I want to do that.. I altered my GSXR a lot, so I don't need to make the FZ so drastic.

I agree about the early look - I think quite a few of us do . My 2MG fairing lowers were damaged and so I replaced with 1FN style fibre-glass ones from Paul at mid-Norfolk mouldings.. Here's how it looked a couple of years ago..

Looks good - the full fairing didn't match the looks of the rear of the bike, somehow the half fairing just suits it.
