Coming back form MOt yesterday - (thanks Paul @ Gardner & White!) noticed bike was fluffing mid-range 5-6k ish. I had a problem plug cap earlier in the summer and was wonderingf might be a re-occurrence of an ignition problem it was quite hot yesterday too - but the issue seem to clear further up the rev range so I'm guessing more likely some muck in the carb(s). Last year I had to swill out the tank and fitted a new fuel filter also went onto reserve for a few miles recently..
Carbs need balancing anyway was i think it will be tank off bowls off for inspection and maybe some new sparkers while I'm in there - other thoughts?
Cheers

I always check the connection between plug cap & HT leads with a suspected misfire. Cheap fix if it's just a bit of green on the copper. Snip it off & screw plug cap back on. Other than that I'm leaning towards your earlier problem of shitty fuel. Gauze filter in the tank is very fine & wouldn't take much to clog it up. Keep us posted with your findings.

Further to this issue.. I went on a longer(for me) ride yesterday and noticed that although not a misfire there is definitely a noticeable flat spot around 5k - cleared by 5k5 then will rev-out to redline. The exhaust is standard I think although I noticed a pinhole in the collector recently and also I think there should be a link pipe between headers 2 & 3 near bend two. this is missing and two patches have been crudely welded over. Carbs were cleaned last year when I undertoook my marathon shim session .. Cheers Jamie

Another update to this.. situation worsened on the way back from L'pool in the summer so I had the carbs off and dropped the needles a notch on the assumption it would lean out the mixture mid-range, I also balanced the carbs (bought a new set of gauges then promptly found my old 'lost' set in a secret drawer) and replaced the screws/copper washer on the intake take-offs. All seems a lot better, I think I can still sense an inflexion point but it feels a lot better. .

Hi, I have the same issues, and think its the non original air filter (monopod filter), the misfire start at 6,5k rpm and end at 8k rpm. Someone use the stock filter and have the same issues?

With the limited amount of information that you've given, it would be difficult to assess your problems. Maybe give a little more information about your bike, ie. Stock vs not stock, mods and a description of those changes. Need a baseline to start from.

MIne has stock filter and exhaust (although it might be an FZR exhaust) anyhow teh 'problem area for me was lower down therev range and I'm beginning to think that as teh carb needles wear over time, the mixture richens, but dropping the needles you are compensating for wear.. Just a small theory. In your case you should try and return the air filter to stock first and check all jets are stock sizes too - and check valve clearance shims (if you dare)

When I bought my fz it didn't have the original air box filter, and I want to buy a used one on eBay. I tested 4 new No. 107 cyclers, and new needles, and the motor works very well at medium RPM (I live between 10-600 meters above sea level).
