I sold my 2007 Speed Triple a few weeks ago as it had caused me no end of grief with one thing & another and the mileage was getting high. When it wasn't pissing me off it was such a hoot on the road. I hardly ever had to touched the brakes on my favourite roads to the local cafe. Punchy motor, lightweight chassis, good looking. I'm actually going to view a newer one tomorrow!

Back in 1996 I came oh so close to buying a 900 Daytona, the yellow one, but having 3 other bikes in the garage at the time and young ones to raise, real priorities prevailed. Fast forward to today and the boys are grown and doing their own thing, so now I have both the resources and the time to do as I please. Now it's deciding how much time to invest, the clocks ticking as they say. I spend more time at home with wife as we just haven't felt comfortable traveling post covid. Having said that, we'll be in France for a wedding next fall, right after my oldest ties the knot next summer. So, yeah, one day at a time.

Believe it or not, I found a center stand on extortion-bay of all places, you cannot imagine what I paid for it. But seeing as this is only the second one I've seen in over a year, I had to grab it before it was gone. Kinda nice being able to center it up now. Very close to a completely stock '85 fz750, very pleased.

Ok, So I'm a few miles in and it seems like a good time for an update. Overall very pleased with the bike, it starts every time, without so much as a hiccup, tap the starter button and we're off. After a few hundred miles it started to develop an off idle hesitation once warm and then it turned into a significant a stumble, so I went down the check list of possibilities. Pulled the plugs and got my first clue, black as a cat, which means rich. So, first I pull the tank and check the air filter, it's fine. Now since I've gotten the tank and airbox off it's time to take a peek at the carbs, i'm not really looking forward to this. Now I bought this rack of mixers off a gentleman on ebay, and I initially inspected them before installing as they came with a K&N stage 1 kit already installed, and everything checked out, easy peasy, right? Well first thing I decided to do is clear tube the float heights, even in the manual its not quite that clear about how this is done but after rereading the method (what seemed like 15 times) I'm able to mark the sides of the float bowls with a sharpie and have a reference point to go against. So after an eternity I able to get a clear tube on each carb run the bike and check the float height, their close, damn close, given that the mark to reference on the side of the bowl is an approximation as well. Next up should have been dropping the needles but I'm of the mind at this point that less is better and disassembling the intake rack is just not what I'm up to at this point. So I look to the mixture screws, which are 3 1/2 turns out, the kit says that it may be necessary to lean it out and to turn them in a 1/2 turn at a time, which I do and then promptly reinstall the rack. Fingers crossed. I take it on out for a shake down ride and jesus doesn't it run just fking peachy. Next I stop at the filler-up station where I hand over the obligatory $12 buck and filler her up (still way cheaper than any car I've ever owned). So at this point I'm good, one less thing, ya know. Until a couple of days later. I'm recently retired so I can hop on any bike now and go for a ride whenever, my first inclination is of course, the FZ. And at first it starts and goes just like its it's supposed to, and then as it starts to warm up, which really means its climbing up the temp gauge higher than it normally does, its warmer than the previous day and I'm also leaning a little more as its just running so damn good, the stumble starts to return and then it starts to skip. Really..... I make it home pull the #3 plug, exhaust for that cylinder is cold, and it's fouled, fk.... Pull the tank, airbox and the rack cause we're lowing the needles. Again, not really looking forward to doing this, its busy work and everything from this point forward is incredibly small. I get it done reassemble reinstall and put the rest back together and go for a ride. It seems to have improved again, but I've pulled the plugs and we're still a smidge rich, or it's just the plugs are still rich in appearance from before, time will tell...
To be continued...

Guessing you have balanced the carbs since doing all this work? Makes a big difference if not.

Oh yeah, first thing I did. I just finished a ride, it's markedly better, especially when hot, a stumble that develops when hot is a sign of being rich. I really don't feel like resetting float heights. So, I'm going to turn the mixture screws in another 1/2 turn and see what happens. I gotta pull a plug or two and see what's going on, its still got an ever so small off throttle hesitation that only a nit picker like myself would notice. If it goes away after the next adjustment, then I'll put in a new set of plugs and do a plug/throttle chop and see what they look like. Its still a little rich I believe, once it cools down later tonight I'll pull a couple and see what they show. If it doesn't improve after the next mixture adjustment the bowls are coming off, just not right away, it's just takes too long to do.

Get's warm, starts to stumble, plug fouled?
I'd be checking ignition too - swapping out the coils, stripping out the plug caps- who else knew they could be taken apart?- and shining them up.

Ok, after my last 2 rides, which were absolutely awful, I decided to pull the rack and just set the whole thing back to stock. I've got a stock set that came with the bike but the slides are hopelessly stuck, so I was able to pull out what was needed to get there. First thing that really stuck out when reassembling was, float heights, (I even replaced the floats, yes...) the floats that came in the rack I purchased off Ebay had at some point been readjusted, they were 3mm ,give or take a smidge, higher than the ones I had removed from the set I had. I set it as a measurement from the highest point of the float from the edge of the carb bowl flange, 10mm. Once I have a float height that works, then I'll clear tube the damn thing and see if it reflects what Yamaha has as a reference. From what I've been able to gather, the stock jetting is 105 for 1&4 and 102.5 for 2&3. Then there's a specific set of needles for each set, yet I've 2 sets of stock needles (1 set from my rack and another in the k&n kit)and they're all 5cez2's, no 5cdz4's. I pulled the 112 mains replaced with the stock mains then reinstalled the stock needles reset the mixture screws to 2 1/2 turns out. Reinstalled the entire rack, started it up resync'd the carbs (again) and reset the idle. Went for a ride and yes, its entirely different. The enrichner works just like it should, pull it out, start it up and the tach climbs right up to 3k, it wouldn't go past 2k previously, and now it takes a little bit to warm up, it didn't do that before either. Previously you could just start it up and it was ready to go (another indicator it was entirely too rich). After maybe a minute its ready to go, keeping in mind it was 92 degrees here yesterday. And its a bunch smoother from a delivery stand point, and that big rush from 7k on up is gone, it pulls, just not like it did. So I'm gonna pull the plugs here in a bit and see what they show and if it looks better that it has, we're putting in a new set of plugs and going from there. Once it's hot, it idles and doesn't miss a beat. I'd like to get the k&n mains and needles back in but I need a good base to start from, I'm really hoping that's where we are moving forward. Time will tell.

Ok, plugs have a more normal appearance, I'm 2 rides in and no problems. We'll ride it for a little longer and see what it returns in terms of reliability, so far so good. I'd like to say that the floats were too high but I'm not entirely convinced of that yet, but if all goes well I'm going to reinstall the 112's with the needles and see what that returns, I really miss that top end push it gives. Ive owned 4 Yamaha's in my lifetime, and everyone had an electrical problem, some induced by previous owners (like this one) some just by inherited design deficiencies. My last was a 1979 rd400f Daytona, it was and has been the best buy/sell ratio of any bike I've ever owned or bought and just flipped, but like everyone of those bikes, it had a plethora of electrical gremlins. It took months to remedy its problems and even then I was never entirely convinced it was a entirely dependable ride. This FZ had a few as well, several over heated junction connections from over loading to just poor grounds. The previous owners put extra lights on it and there were multiple overloaded burns in the wiring harness, there may be more and I just haven't seen them yet. God lets hope not.

Progress it is, and I decided to make another incremental change and see how that goes. So today I installed the 108 jets with the stock needles, what have i got to lose. The one thing I did notice on closer inspection was that the main jet o-rings in the jet holder on cylinders 3&4 were essentially trash, so I ditched all 4 o-rings and put it back together. Took her for a ride and she performed flawlessly, so glad, we'll ride her some more and then make another adjustment (needles and springs). If the next change works out, we'll be reinstalling the 112's and go from there.

Ok, so I changed out the needles, reset the clip height back to the middle and reinstalled the k&n carb slide springs today then reset the idle mixture screws to 3 turns out, replaced the carb spring cover JIS screws with hex drive button head screws, whew.... lots of small parts and busy work. Once I was able to get the first slide spring out I spent a few minutes comparing the stock spring to the k&n spring, low and behold they're basically the sam length but the k&n spring has 16 coils to the stock sping which has 17 coils. This makes them similar to the Factory Pro spring modification, where you remove 1 1/2 coils, except the factory pro mod asks you to resize the spring to 5.1 inches, the stock and k&n coil only measure 4.25 inches in length. Once all 4 where back in and together I went for a ride. It started right up, I let it warm up for about 2 minutes and then snicked it into gear, the off idle transition was great, no hesitation or bog, just smooth throttle delivery, needless to say, I'm happy at this point. Once out on the road it's as slick as ever, maybe even the best it's been so far. It spools up from a stop very nicely, much better than the stock set up, I banged the tach needle up to 9k in the first 3 gears and it's got real good giddy up, never misses a beat. I bog it down to 2k in 2nd, 3rd and 4th and it just pulls cleanly, no hesitation. Again I've no complaints, the entire ride was basically just testing how well the set up works, and so far so good. A 35 mile ride just rowing thru the gears, we're good. Pulled a plug, looked at it and its still a smidge rich at idle, but if its not fouling any plugs, I'm leaving it, time will tell. Going to ride for a while longer and then evaluate what I have. Earlier when I noticed that cyl's 3&4 had bad main jet o-rings, it wasn't so much that they were bad, but they weren't normal o-rings either, it looks as if the previous owner made his own o-rings and did a trashy job at it, the opening was way small. I'm pretty sure they were contributing to some of my earlier problems. I'll ride a while before I make any more changes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it..
