I'm presently looking at fitting R1 forks to my FZ, the main concern is that I would like to try and keep the original speedo drive but obviously the R1 speedo will be electrical. Therefore does anyone know of any ideas that would allow me to keep the original speedo drive, or as a way of updating to electrical, anyone who who could make a speedo that would look as original as possible?

you could get the left fork leg and R1 wheel modified to accept the FZ's speedo drive?

Probably not much use but the TRX850, FZR600 94-96 fox eye model & probably others share the same speedo drive which is the same as the FZ's just with a bigger hole to accept a fatter wheel spindle ?

Thanks for that, I was unaware of the other Yamaha speedo's that are similar so I think I'll look down that route first as a possible solution and let you know how it turns out. Cheers

I toyed with the idea of drilling out my FZ drive to accept the FZR wheel spindle (I have FZR600 forks fitted & a TRX wheel) but the insert (brass ?) didn't look thick enough to withstand it & once I noticed that the FZ drive fitted in my TRX wheel perfectly I just bought a TRX drive from a member on the TRX850 forum. The wheel spindle diameter for the FZR & TRX are the same so there are probably several others from that era that will fit. The outer casings are the same so it all fits in the notch on the left hand fork leg nicely. I need to get some proper wheel spacers made now front & back as I'm just using a couple of big washers at the moment !
