I tried to keep things in large chunks, and in the space of about an hour the bike was down to this.

So the 750 is now stripped and I have a plan. I decided to go for thunderace running gear all round. I toyed with the idea of a r6 front end with radial brakes but feel the rwu front end is the way to go and at 48mm I believe they are the biggest production forks available, barring some Bimotas. I also happen to have a set of thunderace forks sitting here and it's nice to keep things Yamaha.
The whole bike is in bits now and so I can get the frame on the bench and see what needs to be done to make this work, the front end looks like a straightforward stem swap but the rear might need a bit more thought.

I was thinking of a similar route myself for a track bike I am going to build (eventually) The front will be fairly straight forward, I think even the rear maybe quite easy as it is mostly similar to a YZF or Exup conversion. the shock is the same length as exup & the linkage is very similar. The swingarm will be not too bad,if it uses the same bearings as a YZF 750 I think you may be able to slip in the FZ bush & away you go.It may need a little research but fairly easy.

As suspected the front is just a stem swap and a bit of piddling around with the ignition mount.
The swing arm is too wide at the pivot area to go straight in and the Fz pivot is smaller that the Thunderace item, so the arm needs making narrower and the bearing needs a sleeve to bring it down to 16mm.

Best not to go for the 911 while it is unusual it causes a lot of work and as mentioned the 1fn is not ideal.
My mate still has the flowed Ace engine an all the bits, paint it black and away you go ;D ;D

So the decision is made, I'm gonna stick with the 750 for now and look for a good 1000 engine at my leisure.
John asked about my frame number, 1fn-001586
I ordered a new tail piece today as there appears to be no good second hand ones about. The part is still available and I chose to buy one in the solid red as opposed to the silver that my bike should be. Reason? well the part costs over 10 quid less and it's gonna be sprayed regardless.
The frame is away having a bit of welding done at the moment but is coming back on Monday. The arm came back from the machinist yesterday and next week Ill try and do a dry build before sending the frame off for powder coating. I'll also try and do some more detailed pictures.
I just need to find a Thunderace front mudguard and wait for the tailpiece then I can get the body off for paintwork.

hi number 6 i also have a thunder ace rear end for my fz , just wondering exactly what mods have been made to your arm ? also what shock are you using ? brad Hi Brad, The t/ace arm is too wide so has to be reduced and the t/ace spindle is thicker than the fz so has to be sleeved. Glad you asked about the shock as that reminded me that is still something I need to get, however it would appear that there are a few options 1000 exup, t/ace, yzf750 and after a bit of research it looks like a thundercat may do the job as well.

Here's a shot showing the difference between the FZ stem and Thunderace item, this is after the fz stem has been pressed into the Thunderace yoke. The various diameters are the same they just differ in length, the fz bearings are a direct fit to the Thunderace stem.

Apart from the stem swap the ignition mount on the top yoke needed a few mil taking of and the fz ignition barrel fitted in, the steering lock works but in a bit of a straight ahead position. The other thing that needed attention was the lock stops, the std Fz frame tab only just caught the blocks on the Thunderace bottom yoke, it also allowed to much lock which meant the forks would clash with the rad. The frame tab has been built up by 5mm to the sides and front.

With the help of some pics from Robbo I marked up the bits of the centre stand mount that need to be removed, for some reason someone had already taken quite a lump off one side.

I managed to snag a seat pod on ebay last week, seems these things have become pretty scarce in the last couple of months. While the plastic part was ok (few hairline cracks that will require attention) the foam pad was pretty worn and I felt unusable in this condition.
