Really good effort Allie. The FZ seems to be set up really well, and has plenty of acceleration out of corners. What kind of brakes are you running? Watching the video it looks like that's the only place where you were losing ground. Your lines were all pretty good and consistent. I loved watching you, and I'm well impressed. Thanks very much for posting the vid. C'mon the FZs!!!!

Thanks for the ego boost, i am using 1000 exup calipers on 43mm exup forks with 320 mm discs, last outing i had issues with the discs. one was warped so bought some laverda ones which are the same as the exup ones also found one of the fork legs was slightly bent so had to get some new forks. so this time it handled well i had also shorted the dog bones from 156mm to 152mm with the exup rear end. i think i was poor on the brakes as i need some progressive springs and was a bit wary of the conditions on the track, there were some wet patches as i possibly found out. but im aware that i need to get off the bike a bit more . fairly pleased though, but for the falling off. not bad as its 15 years since i was last on the track. i was wondering if the shortened bones could have contributed to the crash ? and the shortened wheel base of the exup bits. normally the Fz is fairly long. could the slide have been made worse a si do have a vague recollection of the bars flicking before i went down. i suppose i will analyse it for a while yet. hey ho xx hugs to all

I tried shorter dog bones on mine but found that they increased the effective spring rate a lot, making the rear end skip off bumps so they could have contributed to your off. I think you had changed quite a lot of other stuff at the rear end? If so, taking it to someone like Steve Jordan to get it properly set up would be wise - and cheaper than getting hurt again Stock FZs are VERY long - I don't think it's possible to shorten them too much unless you've altered the rake or the offset at the triple clamps. Get well soon.

thanks for that, who is steve jordan? www.stevejordanmotorcycles.co.uk/page.asp?page=racing_reportsThe shop is near Reigate. Steve has been racing for ever and his wife Sarah almost as long. Steve does all race engine and suspension work himself - his list of credits is impressive but he'll work on anything (he's got my best FZ engine at the moment ) He has been near the front or won several MRO championships and campaigned a Ducati 848 in BSB Evo this year, so he also puts his money where his mouth is ;D . To give you an idea what he can do, he won the Thunderbike Championship last year on a self-modded SV650, consistently lapping the Brands Indy circuit in 51 seconds and the GP circuit in 1m 36s !

do you think that going from 156 to 152 on the bones was to much? i found out that on that on the exup 1mm off the bones was about 4.5mm jack up so 4mm would have been a raise of about 18mm at the back, i had been told the last time i was at the track day that i should either drop the forks in the yokes or shorten the bones, couldnt drop the forks due to clearance issues . i was told this by the suspension people at the track. Reigate a bit far for me to take the bike as do not have a van and cant ride for a while yet.

You've hit the same issues as everyone who tries to set an FZ up for track use does. They're all down to the FZ being very long. As stock, with the axle right forward in the adjusters they're about 1460mm wheelbase. With a 180/55 Racetech in there you can get it down to a shade under 1420mm before the tyre hits the cross member but that's still too long. So, you drop the yokes until you run into clearance issues, then start jacking the rear up. I don't know enough about this to argue with your suspension specialists, but when I tried doing this by shortening the dog bones I thought it made the rear very harsh in the first part of the stroke. I put this down to the suspension LINKAGES setting the way the shock reacts - I think the spring is one rate but reacts progressively due to the way the linkage works. You'd have to check this theory with Maxton, Steve Jordan or someone who knows what they're doing. Anyway, I put the stock bones back in and bought a longer (by 15mm) lower fork for the shock. This takes the shock length to about 318mm and was as far as I was as happy to go because the chain starts sawing the swingarm pad in half if you go much further. I was much happier with the way the back wheel reacted to bumps with this set up. I've got a project ongoing with an FZR1000 arm shortened and fitted with R6 hangers but if I get it fitted I'll get the suspension set up by Steve J. because last time I tried a shorter swingarm it also seemed to affect the effective spring rate - as you would expect. There may well be suspension specialists closer to you but, given the possibility of getting hurt if it's wrong, I personally would want to use someone with a track record or reputation. Keep at it anyway

hiya thanks for that i will investigate the issues a bit more.
next issue is the top fairing, mine is a bit cracked now, i have found a blue one on flea bay but they want £100 for it and it is damaged. another after market one for 35 but it is a twin headlight one and tatty, so thought i might try and repair mine, does any one know of a possible colour match for the Fz 2mg blue or where i can get some paint , touch up or cans etc

I took the fairing into halfords with me and compared it to the hvarious shades available until I found the closest for my grey fairing.

ok that sound like a plan , i will put the fairing in the basket on my pushbike and take it to halfords, mmmm there is a car paint place in hove that mixes paint and sells it in cans, that mght be better as they can mix it better to match
