Take off the fuel "0ut" pipe from the pump Tom & crank the engine with the key. Anything less than a strong constant spurt of fuel & the pump is shafted. Nice one Crusty for sorting the FZ.

The trouble is, Kenny (absolute diamond geezer!) is sending me a pickup coil.....

I would get a mouthful of petrol, but it isn't delivering the amount needed to sustain the engine under load. The problem with checking the fuel pump without renewing the other stuff up to it, is if there is a blockage before the fuel pump it still wouldn't pump, even if the pump was good. By all accounts, the mechanical fuel pump was adequate, at best, from new so I'm going to try the electric route. I did honestly consider pinching the FZ fuel pump but I might as well go down the facet fuel pump route, as it's only low pressure that I need (up to 4psi).

A word of advice, don't listen to a word I say. I'm not known for my mechanical prowess.
The only thing I have going in my favour over this whole debacle is that I did choose the right parts to replace. I just didn't have the sense to replace them both at the same time....

And so the saga continues....
It's still not starting properly, misfiring quite a bit.
But.... all four exhausts are getting hot at the same sort of rate so all of them must be firing.
This really limits it to a couple of problems as far as I can see. Either timing or crap fuel.
If it's crap fuel, running it until virtually empty and then filling up should sort it.

unless running it until virtually empty drags any crap you might have in your tank down in to the fuel tap area?

I've run it that low before, but not recently so I'm not worried about crap in th tank (aside from crap fuel......)

Re. the coils, I wouldn't chuck them yet. The coils themselves are pretty robust but the leads are less so. They tend to disintegrate into a lot of green crap where they screw onto the coil terminals. I know they look like sealed units but they're not - if you can get some 7mm copper cored lead it's worth making up new leads.

Right, we have a new symptom.
Once running (and past it's crap starting bit) its fine ticking over and up to about 3.5 grand, but any more than that (and wider open throttle) it starts to miss a bit.

I will suggest you have a blockage in one or more of your main jets. My Fireblade does exactly the same thing if I don't start it for a few months. If you're lucky a healthy squirt of carb cleaner in the direction of the air intake whilst "attempting" to rev the bike will sort it. I hope you don't have to take your carbs off if the air box rubbers are anything like mine.

Thats exactly what I was thinking.
I think I bought some crap fuel. All these issues came on too suddenly but not terminally enough for it to be a major failure for it to be anything other than a simple fix.

My Airbox rubbers are fine. Took about two hours with a bowl of hot water last summer to make them fine though......

Right, it wasn't crappy fuel
It could still be some sort of carburetter problem as I wasn't able to get them off the bike. They're stick too firmly in their rubbers and I don't want to break them.
I managed to get the float bowl off of one, and aside from a red powdery residue in the bottom, there was no sign of blockage in the jets.
I couldn't get the others off in situ as the screws are too tight and I don't want to knacker the heads.
Next job is to look for a poor connection with the multi meter and if that turns nothing up, replace the pickup with the one Kenny sent me!

So I start testing wires. Everything checks out until I get to the pickup coil wires. Infinate resistance (i.e. a broken wire)
Good job a free spare arrived in the post this morning....
