For some reason I find myself strangely compelled to a dated bike, with 16" wheels, with more valves than I have feeler gauges. When my old man saw the press release back in 84(?), he siad bloddy stuppid idea, why do you need all that complexity!!
However I'm after one. Seeing the Eddie Lawson bike made me think. Gotta have it!!! Besides its 50 years of Yamaha at the TT next year. You cant go on anything else. So guys is there gonna be a FZ750 rally at the TT next year. I'll be there on my FZ. Oh did I mension I don't own one yet.
Now seriously, what do they ride like, are all the conversions really necessary?

I'm really pleased about your positive attitude towards buying an FZ. There does seem to be a few around for sale at the mo, and at reasonable prices still. Are the mods necessary? No, but if you can make your bike that little bit better so that you have more confidence in it, then yes.

Hi, After about 22 bikes? went into the touring scene mainly Honda Goldwings, then one day got bored and bought a "85 FZ750 FM model, that blew all the cobwebs away, power!, handling! plenty of mods available if you want to go that way!. Now I have the best of both worlds touring and sports!!!!! trinity.

If ya can find a tight, unmolested version,go with it. Ride it and treat it as the classic it is. If you're going to build something, then the mods are worth the effort. Premium 16" rubber is none existant and the brakes were marginal even when they were new. Watch the electrics. Even here in sunny southern California, the harness, handswitches and fuel pump get weird with age. Good Luck and welcome!

Thanks for the encouragement guys. Did you see those 2 on eBay that sold last night? A Lawson rep with FZR1000 front and rear and a spare bike to get your bits for £585. I did bit tentatively but with a garage full of bikes in bits wasnt too bothered. There seem to be a few about and it's a few months before the winter rebuild season arrives.
Have a good weekend all

I've now been looking at FZs for a good few weeks now. I can only summarise from the examples I have seen that Yamaha started this bike as a 'pure sports' production race bike. As it started to suffer at the hands of the Suzuki Slabside 'tug' they seem to have given up and headed towards Goldwing tourer. No offence chaps, but the early ones are the best!!

As I see it, I tell myself that the 1st run Genesis engine was derived from Yamaha's 1980's formula one racing team. So with a winning V8 motor, they said "lets cut it in half and put it in a motorcycle." For for the rare few years after that, your could buy a REAL Formula 1 inspired motor! Watching some old races, even the announcers stated the GXS has the power but just can't catch the Yamaha. AS for buying, less mods is better and if you can find one that is under 15000 miles, you can enjoy the motor 11,000 more mile before the valve check. And Rifleman is correct, don't buy a nice one to turn it into a beater and expect to pay for a mint one, like this - detroit.craigslist.org/okl/mcy/1877750223.html or this peoria.craigslist.org/mcy/1840953651.htmlThey are out there! And if your way handy get one under a $1000 with a good motor and let the restoration begin!
