Crap! I accidentally mixed up all the valve lifters and pads I'd pulled out of the head!
Any suggestions on how to recover from this? Ideally one that can be done before reinstalling the camshafts and caps? Otherwise all I can think of is reinstall, check the valve clearances, disassemble And shuffle the pads around to meet the tolerances.
Thanks in advance - Kenny

I'll ask in this thread: Wanna get my '85 FZ's valves adjusted. Dunno the distance the bike has done for sure. The odo has only about 40k km now. Had 27k when I bought it back in 2004. Judging by the wear of the clutch side rubber handle, the km's could be correct. I had a 85' FZ b4, and it's handle was far more weared out at 60k when I parted with it in 1993. But like I said, can't be absolute sure, the handle can have been changed too. ANYWAY: I now asked from the bike shop in town, the one which does this to the old bikes too; 300 € the minimum, and probably 500 € when all the 12 intake valves would need adjusting.. Can this be true..? THEN; the guy at the shop told; "we can adjust them, u then ride some 10 000 km and then u need to get a full cylinder head renovation.. 'cos it's so old" I asked "no matter how little km's it has..?" he said "yes, with 15 years of experience with these I can say this" Can_this_be_true? Maybe he mixed it with YZF 750 R..? Then; where can I find good instructions to make that adjust by myself? :-) Edit: yep, the cold start hasn't maybe been best possible anymore..

These prices may be down to the price of new shims as they are very expensive. You can do the job yourself and ask on here for the shims you need.I am sure someone could have the ones you need. A full renovation..all I can say is why! The age of the head has little bearing on the needs of head renovation. I have stripped a few of these now and the only issue I found was excess corrosion around the exhaust header ring. You have the head off so I am sure you will give each valve a check and clean and light lapping in. If you need the instructions I am happy to scan the pages out of the manual and email them to you.
Good luck with your rebuild

That's what I think too about full renovation.. Clearly this shop guy don't know FZ at_all ;-) They do have shims, they r 10 € each and 5 € in trade. Although I now doubt if they have right ones, doesn't FZ require some special shims too.. Asking from here may work best. The base price for work was 270 € (just for checking them.) The bike is still in riding condition, that's how I left it in the autumn. All I'm planning maybe do is to check the valve clearances and adjust if needed. That's a job exciting enough already.. If u could send the valve adjust instructions, that'd be great! I do have some repair manual in .pdf form smwhr, but it may be hard to find.. My email: jukka.hayrinen@gmail.com Thanx! Jukka

How about measuring those valve clearances, if it's done to a cold engine in +5 'C or in +20 'C weather? Hopefully there's no crucial difference..

Does anyone have a source for the valve adjustment pads (shims/ top hat/ bucket shim) Or... Does anyone know if lifters from another year Yamaha (one that DOESN'T use these overpriced shims) will fit? They clearly didn't continue to use this style lifter so the advantages of it must not have been worth the extra costs

How about measuring those valve clearances, if it's done to a cold engine in +5 'C or in +20 'C weather? Hopefully there's no crucial difference.. Those temperatures should be fine. Ambient air temperature is all they mean by "cold" some manufacturers specify the engine be at operating temperature which would be nearly impossible to achieve accurate measurements on a 20valve engine in the short amount of time it would take to cool down.
