My FZ is my first liquid cooled bike and I had a couple of questions. During normal riding my temp gauge never gets very far. Yesterday I was sitting in traffic for an extended period of time and my temp gauge steadily climbed towards the red zone. At what point does the cooling fan kick on? I was fortunately able to get moving before I got to find out if it was actually going to overheat or not.

Should kick in just past the gap between the two green sections.

Would you think of what I experienced was normal or do I have a cooling fan issue?

If you are really concerned then I would firstly check your fuses to make sure that your fan fuse hasn't failed. If that's ok then you will need to make sure that you've got a 12 volt supply to your thermostat housing by disconnecting the thermostatic switch coupler which is a red and blue wire on my bike. If you have a 12 volt supply from the red wire (the blue wire is the connecting wire to the fan), then you can check the operation of the fan by running a jump lead straight from the red wire to the blue wire with the ignition on (you will only by bypassing the thermo switch). If your fan is working after this then you will likely have to inspect the thermostatic switch which should operate between 98 degrees C and 105 degrees C. Yamaha strongly advise against subjecting the thermo switch to strong shocks or dropping, if it is then it should be replaced.

Mine runs a bit hot in traffic but cools down again once moving. Similar to what yours did but didn't get to the red, about 3/4 up the scale. Ambient temp in Bris can be quite warm so not too concerned. I have other bikes that do the same. Just made suere teh coolant was good, the passageways were clean (no brown crap) and the fan was working.
