Hi all, its been a while since my last FZ build documented in this section. In the mean time i built an FZR1000 streetfighter a few pics attached....I do love my Yamaha's Fate is a funny thing, trolling through ebay yesterday I found a shed of an FZ...honestly its rough!, after close inspection I noticed it had exup front and back end, looking even further I noticed the reg no and its my baby from the 90's, a bike I had featured in the streetfighter mag and exhibited in the Sheffield show...back in the day it was a funky bike (few more pics below of this in various stages of its life). Well I'm picking it up tomorrow and she is coming back home to daddy and the rebuild will happen to put it back as I had it as a nipper....honestly I'm so excited. I will try to document it here & will be asking around for a few spares once I get a better look etc Happy Days!

So here it is....terrible. Nothing that can't be sorted. This will have to be a complete nut and bolt job....including the lump....OUCH£££££ I have decided the first job will be tackle the rear end...lc tail piece, sub frame + have a look at the loom mounting. My mind always works better with a rolling chassis and I think that should be easy to achieve considering I sort of know this bike inside out. I'm looking for a loom, fairing & fairing bracket....has anyone got this to sell to me?

Brave man! If I didn't know better I would say that's a GPZ600 seat.

grumpypete - well in several months I may have a 1FN wiring harness for sale... swapping in an FZR 89 motor and have complete wiring harness to put in as well, will be adding the EXUP so I need to do this... however again, this will be several months down the road, working on suspension currently.
message me later to ask on my progress.

Hey grumpypete
On your last build (let the chaos begin) do you recall what bike your rearsets were from? I want to get some aftermarket units but, with nothing made specifically for the FZ, I'm not sure what's adaptable . Also, what clutch master cylinder did you use on that bike? I've got a unit from a 99 Kawasaki ZX7 but i don't think it pushes enough fluid.
Thanks Mark

Well I'm gathering parts, I have an RD350lc seat and tail piece, fz seat + 2mg loom which will mate straight to the thou and all be it I will have to hack it about. I will cut the back off the fz seat and mate it to the back section of the LC seat. The back of the fz sub frame is fooked, I'm going to just go for it chop it all off. I will tackle this at xmas when I get some time off with some pics etc. God the bike looks like its had a hard life from when I pampered it Mark, for my other build I used GSXR1000 K4 rear sets, this involved cutting off the FZ upper lug and re-welding it to suit the R rear sets & then 25mm spacer bar to offset. I also ground off the gear linkage section on the FZ frame. Clutch master cylinder was off a YZF750...worked perfect, not sure what the bore is off the zx7? Still hunting for a fairing...hard to find....

Hey Pete
Thanks for getting back to me. The ZX7 master is has a 14mm bore and the original FZ unit is marked 5/8 (16mm) so that would be my problem. There's all of one YZF unit for sale on ebay in all of North America so i may have to look at aftermarket or find another suitable donor. Doesn't really matter from what as long as it has a remote reservoir.
Was that a 2004 GSXR1000 that you used? I was going to purchase some aftermarket units like Vortex but was waffling between using ZXR or GSXR. Either or would be a custom mount. Both appear the have the shifter oriented right.
Good luck with that fairing. If you win the lottery Webike Japan had them in carbon fibre.
Regards Mark

Right...finally started on the bike. Started stripping it, wiring loom has more issues than can possibly be described by words....best one being its been filed forever into the bin. The picture explains all. Also, got to love the duct tape on the pod filters, I'm guessing to restrict air flow Next one is the hacked about sub frame....messy. I just cut the bloody thing off I tacked on a new sub frame and mocked the LC tail piece that I borrowed off my mars bar LC. I'm in the process of grafting an LC and FZ seat base together as we speak and will take a few more pics as and when. Also just decided I will clean the carbs loosely wire up it up just to see if it starts even though the plan is to rebuild the lump from top to bottom

Its always slow going for me. Anyway the back end is nearly there. I made a mould for the rear part of the seat :- Next, I stuck both parts together, just a bit more profiling etc. Also there is a seat catch moulded in Finally bought some foam and cut it all to suit. The cover will be get redone etc a little further down the line Next job is to sink some lights into the LC tail unit and mount these. After that strip down and set out welding the sub frame properly.

Well, the back end is finished...ish. Tail unit + sub frame modified to take twin lights. Funny how I don't like the look as much as when I first did it 20 years ago. Tastes change (thank god or I would still have a mullet), but I'm making it look like it used to so that's the route I'm taking regardless...I'm sure when its all painted it will look fine? Under tray also job jobbed, cut around the battery and all that stuff. Time to start breaking it down for painting/refurb etc Drained the fluids and this little baby was stuck to the sump nut...OUCH! I was always going to rebuild the lump, anyway I'm pretty sure its one of the pins from the starter clutch....oh dear!

All seems quiet on the FZ font these days On that note this build has been slow going....but its finally a rolling chassis. The swinging arm and forks have been powder coated polished ali look. I use a place called Aerocoat near Great Yarmouth...nice bloke (Mike) and great service. All my engine parts where masked well....superb. The bike is a dog from how it was in its former glory, everything is taking a lot of time, I wanted to put usd front end on it but decided to go down the route of what she originally looked like...loads to do still....engine rebuild will be the killer. Anyway, all new bearings, discs & ZX10R rear shock and some lovely....dodgy Chinese master cylinders, but I'm going to get the others done, my heart won't trust these.
