one ignition wire went in then out for no apparent reason so i bi passed it going in the box and connected straight to the out wire, I'd forgotten, but I also noticed this when I stripped out all the unnecessary wiring on my race bike. I couldn't understand why this wire was going through a relay, but I replaced the OE relay with a simple one just in case there was a reason for it - sounds like I could have saved myself a fiver

If you have a quality spark, plenty of fuel, so it could be a timing problem then?

Or a crank sensor

Yeah that's what I was thinking for the timing problem

Well, the list of what it's not....
Water in carbs (drained them) Fuel pump (see above) Spark plus (changed tonight) Coils (changed at the weekend, originals now back on because it didn't work at all after that, they check out with a multimeter though)
There seem to be sparks so maybe they are are at the wrong time, but this seems unlikely.
So...
next jobs are to check all the connectors incase I've dislodged one doing the coils. Check the crank sensor is within specs.

Crusty when I had problems with the bike running I checked everything including the crank sensors and they checked out ok. However as soon as I changed them them bike ran fine.......do you have a replacement (or two if 1FN) I have spare singles from later models.
Come on getit running the shock awaits you Merry Christmas

mmm one other idea, i had an issue with a friends fz, the kill switch.. the wires in the switch were corroded , that bike would start but run like a dog, as you reved it higher it appeared to get better but at low revs a dog again , i suppose it was getting more juice through the switch so coudl jump the close but broken wires but at low revs it was only a bit connected if you see what i mean ....

You're not going to believe this, but IT LIVES!!!!!!!!!!
Spark plugs AND coils were fucked. I tried it with new coils, and new spark plugs but not both together.....

Well I've left it a couple of hours and it's still starting with no difficulty.
Looks like the problem is solved....

Well done Crusty. The sense of achievement eh? Now.........can you pop round and sort my motorhome. Being a real bitch and cutting out through what appears to be fuel starvation. I suspect the mechanical fuel pump but I've started at the start and dropped the fuel tank, which is clean-ish. D'oh! Electric fuel pump and new hoses next. That'll teach it!!!

I'm actually very grateful to my mate Si who gave up his Suday morning to comeand have a look at it. He did everything from checking for sparks (weak and non-existant depending on the coil) to making sure the choke was working properly and the carb diaphrams were working as they should.
I wish I was a good mechanic. At best I'm a fitter....
Incidentally he's got an FZR1000 that he's in the process of restoring.
re the motor home. Have you tried taking the pipe off the manual pump and cranking it over to check it's pumping? I thought mine was fuel starvation.

I was watching the fuel filter. It has one similar to the FZ and the filter never filled with fuel as you could see it pumping in. It was trickling, which is why I had to start at the tank as I knew they have another filter on the lift pipe, in the tank. If this was blocked that would be the cause, but if it wasn't then it has to be the fuel pump. (and it wasn't blocked). I unscrewed the filler cap to see if it was vacuuming, and it was, but even with it off, the fuel flow didn't increase.

There's two things you could do to see if it's a problem with the line to the pump or the pump itself.
One of them is to borrow the pump off your FZ and put it in place of your mechanical pump and see if you get fuel through.
The other one is to suck on the pipe and see if you get a mouth full of petrol.....
