It's looking very much like a bad connection. Bike has been left for over an hour on a relatively cold night and started on the button with no difficulties.
The test will be if it starts in the morning...

Right
More investigations this morning.
Nice fat blue sparks from both coils but... I pulled one of the plugs this morning and it was sooty black. Either oil is getting into the cylinders (but it's not particularly smokey whilst running) or we are back to a carburation issue.

that looks rich or oily, so i would assume it could be a carb prob, rather than go straight to cylinder head or rings. do you know anyone that can lend a spare set of carbs to help see if it is the carbs, Blocked airway or perhaps carb diaphragm gone so it will start ok but when revved but one slide is dragging behind the others and so running black and sooty. just some thoughts

I once had a Kawa that sheared the woodruff key on the end of the crankshaft. It would run a bit and then move so then the timing would be massively out. It got worse until it wouldn't run. The amazing thing was.............I found it almost straight away!!!

Blocked airway or perhaps carb diaphragm gone Certainly worth a look - it's easy to see what's happening with the slides when the airbox is off. Unfortunately, you still can't rule out an electrical problem - intermittent sparks would give the same symptom

It could still be a spark issue so this isn't being discounted.
A mate local to here is going to pull apart the carbs for me either this weekend or next and check for a blockage etc. I don't think it's a diaphram, the sliders seem to all move at the same rate but these will be checked as well.
I'm wondering if it's a float valve sticking open or closed.

Well, in todays damp weather it ran even worse which has got me suspecting electrical issues again so....
I thought I'd try out the pickup that Kenny sent me.
It ran even fucking worse once fitted. So I tried to swap them back. Bastard was so tight I couldn't get it out.
I was rocking it from side to side to try and ease it out when the bugger broke. Sorry Kenny....

if ran worse in the heavy rain after standing, i would be tempted to look at the ignition switch or the kill switch area, these are exposed when it is left standing also that black box i mentioned, these are areas that havnt been looked at, seems logical to me any way.
