I don't know the original thickness of the brake pads. Sorry.
Although there are some free repair manuals on the web if you look hard, I found the Clymer paper manual to be better. I got one at a used book store in town, luckily. There are some on Amazon, both new and used.

workshop manual says the following:-
1FN, disc size --- 235 x 7.5 mm pad thickness --- 5.5 mm inside same for outside with wear limit 0.5 mm
next Model,
disc size --- 267 x 5.00 mm pad thickness --- 5.5 mm wear limit 0.5 mm
mext Model, 2mg
disc size --- 298 x 4.00 mm min thickness --- 3.5 mm inner 5.5 mm outer 5.5 mm wear limit 0.5 mm
This is what it says in my w/shop manual, if you see the pattern here, then the min thickness is the same for all solid disc's so the min thickness is 0.5 mm, seems the same goes for the vented disc's on the 1FN,

My workshop manual and other magazines says for the 1FN the following:
front disc size --- 267 x 7.5 mm pad thickness --- 5.5 mm inside same for outside with wear limit 0.5 mm
rear disc size --- 267 x 8.5 mm pad thickness --- 5.5 mm inside same for outside with wear limit 0.5 mm
I looking for the minimum thickness as well...welshbanjo if I'm not mistaken you said that since the min pad thickness is 0,5, then it should be the same for the disc. Then, for instance, for the front discs is 7 mm. Is that right?

if you read my numbers again it states the minimum wear thickness for pads, direct from yamaha,
VENTED DISC 1FN 1985
front brake, dia 235mm x 7.5mm thickness pad thickness inner 5.5mm inner and outer wear limit 0.5mm disc
rear brake, dia 235mm x 8.5mm thickness pad thickness inner 5.5mm inner and outer wear limit 5.5mm
maximum deflection: 0.15mm , minimum disc thickness front: 6.5mm wear limit for this disc is :4mm rear : 7.5mm wear limit for this disc is :4mm
1fn SOLID DISC 1986/7
disc size 267mm is dia 5.00mm is thickness, pad thickness (new is 5.5mm) with wear limit of 0.5mm nothing listed for this but as the later 2mg has a minium of 3.5mm then personally id go for that fig
my 1990 2mg uses the 298mm solid disc's, new thickness is 5.0mm minimum thickness is 3.5mm

WELSHBANJO,
that's excellent thanks for your info. I have another question at this point. We have stated that 1985 1FN bikes have 7.5 mm thickness broke on front and 8,5 mm thickness brakes rear. For both, the wear limit is 4 mm. So it mean that is possible to install front disc on the rear wheel. Is it correct?
Thank you,
Luca

i have to be nosey and ask why do you want to use front on the rear?
you would have to check the clearance of pad to disc if fitting front disc to rear,i know it only seems a samll amount in thickness, yamaha would have fitted the same front & rear if they thought it wasa good idea, even if only on cost reasons but they didn't for some reason ?
better still fit a front caliper to rear if fitting front disc im no expert on the 1fn but i would stick with original disc if i was keeping the 16" front and 18" rear wheels,
if your uprating then go for the 3 spoke wheels of 17" with disc's wider choice of rubber better braking, vented disc's are not up to much when new, a friend who raced a proddy 1fn in 85, upgraded to the 2 pot lockheed calipers and harris brkts left rear std, inproved braking no end,
if you want to fit solid disc's front or rear or a smaller disc to the rear, check out the other yamahas of similar years using similar wheels, xj series or ypvs etc , but you will have to use the caliper as that will be different width wise to cater for thinner disc, i think the bolt pattern are the same for the 2 pot calipers,
as always measure, measure, verniers + calipers steel rules, and now lasers are good bits of kit if changing checking things around

Hello,
the reason why I'm asking is that I found a set of replacement discs (used) for a 1FN. The seller has 4 discs and can't tell if are rear or front discs. Generally speaking, the diameter and the bolting are the same, the only difference as we know is the thickness. So I measured that and find out that the thickness is between 7 and 7,3 mm. Are they ok for front and rear?
THX!

luca, looks like the thickness is ok & within the Yamaha tolerance, as i mentioned fitting front disc to rear, check the clearance on the rear caliper to disc pads isnt to far apart, easist way is to check to see if the pads part numbers are the same for front and rear,if they are the same pads then it should be ok,
