Trying to get the jetting set up on my 85 FZ. I live at 4400 ft altitude which means stock jetting is too rich.
We went down to 97.5 mains and the dyne sniffer says that is excellent for the top end. However the midrange is very rich, which seems to cause a stumble when the throttle is cracked from a constant running condition. The needles are all the way down and the midrange is still way too rich. Fuel screws are set 3 turns out.
One possibility is the needle jets are worn or ovaled which is allowing excess fuel past the needle.
Anyone got any suggestions?

It will most likely be the emulsions tubes that are ovaled. Replace them to see if it helps.

That is what we suspected. The bike has 58,000 kms on it so that would seem to be a reasonable conclusion.

Replacement needle jets made all the difference. We went from way too rich with the needles all the way down to slightly lean. Next step is slight adjustment to needle position then one size larger pilot jet and that should be good.
