I have pulled my carbys off for the umpteenth time and I CANNOT find any mixture screws.
I am having idling problem and all the FZ threads I read talk about setting them about 2 1/2 turns outs from seated BUT I CAN'T FIND ANY! In all other ways the carbys seem to match the diagrams I have found online and in Clymers.
Is this common or am I blind?

They're in the bar that runs in front of the engine side of the diaphragm covers. They would have been behind rubber bungs when the bike was new but the bungs are probably long gone.

After your post I double checked, there are no adjustment screws anywhere on the exterior of these carbs. I can see cast mouldings in the alloy that are blank where they might have been installed but no screws and certainly no screws with springs. In fact that only adjustment screws are for syncing.

I suspect you are seeing item 31 (cap) on this parts list . I believe some markets had an alloy cap instead of the rubber bung I mentioned - it will have to be prised out to access the screw head. With the carbs attached to the engine, the casting for the mixture screws of 1 and 4 carbs can be seen directly above the inlet tract, parallel to the ground with the screw heads facing the radiator.

Thanks, I found them. Three were 2.5 turns out but one was only 1.5. Changing the fourth mixture screw made a big difference but I still need it a little richer. So, do you know if these are are or fuel mixtures crews so I know which way is which?

From memory, out is richer and stock is 2.75 turns out. Out of interest, what problem are you trying to cure? I ask because any adjustments you make, apart from setting them all the same, will be random unless you have first selected the right main jet, needle settings and float heights, and dealt with the fact that the needle jets are probably worn oval :-( Apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but it's hard to tell how experienced anyone is on these forums.
