i'm trying to clean the cylinder bores so i can measure them for wear. i used mineral spirits and a nylon brush first, then hot soapy water and a rag. there is a black residue in there that i can't get off. rust? when i took the head off, some coolant spilled into the jugs. i soaked most of it up with rags, but there was a little bit that sat in there for several weeks before i removed the block and pistons. should i try to remove it with steel wool? will honing likely clean this up or am i in for a rebore? residue in bores 003 by polyrhythmic81, on Flickr residue in bores 004 by polyrhythmic81, on Flickr residue in bores 002 by polyrhythmic81, on Flickr residue in bores 001 by polyrhythmic81, on Flickr

You can use some fine wet and dry, with a little oil, or something called a glaze buster. A glaze buster has three spring loaded arms with abrasive pads on, which you spin inside the bore with a power drill

If they are within wear tolerance then no problem.....if you can get a hold of the three legged glaze buster that would give the best results

Can't tell for sure but going from your pictures those bores look a bit beyond a glaze buster to me? No harm in trying though.
