I've managed to get a 87 1000 engine for my project, it comes with carbs and electrics but I was wondering if I need to grab any thing else to make the change as painless as possible like switchgear and ignition or will my fz items plug and play?

You will need engine, carbs, airbox, cdi & coils. If you have a 1FN model you will need to swap a couple of wires in the plug for the CDI & if you use the oil cooler you will need to make brackets to mount to the frame or have a bypass hose made. There are a couple of plumbing issues with the cooler or rad hoses but easily rectified. You will also need an exhaust. You will also need to change the gearing,my 750 was geared for approx 147mph,bolting in the 1000 engine & using the same gearing it had potential to do approx 175mph.

I will probably grab the loom as well so does that mean I won't have to swap any wires around? Will the micron I have not fit? thats a bit of a pisser as it was one of the main things that swung me on this bike.
I'll probably keep the oil cooler.
What gearing will I need to go for?

keep the FZ loom as you will lose the electric fuel tap & fuel gauge. It is only two wires to swap,it`s dead easy & much easier than swapping over a loom that wasn`t designed to fit your bike. All your switchgear & clocks will all work.I didn`t realise what pipe you had,the micron will work.Get the 1000 rad though,it may be a little easier to plumb in. If you need any info give me a shout. It is an easy convertion & well worth the effort. Gearing wise would depend on which wheels you are using,if standard wheels go up to a 46 or 47 rear sprocket, will still be geared for about 165 but feels much more relaxed than the 750 motor.Do the valve clearances before you fit the engine,it is much easier with the engine out

I've got to agree with Scobri on most of this. On mine I've used the Micron pipe from when I had the 750/911 engine fitted and had no problems with it, I've also not bothered to use the oil cooler that the 1000 engine normally runs and had no problems. Lastly I had a radiator made when I had the 750 motor (the only difference being that clip ons wouldn't foul the radiator filler cap and the lower left pipe points in a different direction so that I could ditch the pipe that goes around the front of the engine) and I've had no problems with the temperature. Basically just see how you get on without buying too much, you will need the majority of parts that Scobri mentioned. Good luck. P.S. My speedo goes a little bit more haywire at around 160 mph, don't know why.
