I am POSITIVE the mounting them somewhere else would be a great idea, but I really didn't mind cutting the box out a tad and patching up the holes.
i am going to have to say that you know about 1000x more about these bikes than myself, but I am really interested in getting this thing running, and getting spark, then i am sure i will go jet/pipes/filters like i had on my last one. i just want the spark to work right, here is where I am as of now.
I got the coils on, air box etc. and the bike ran better, but still not well, and still no spark on #1 and #4.
I had spark on 2 and 3. Enough to run the bike. Spark on 2 and 3 were running the motor. This makes sense as that is what was happening last time, but it ran worse (bad coils). So basically, I replaced 1 1/2 bad coils with two new ones, but the 1 and 4 were not working now.
Now, after that I switched the wires from 1 & 4, with the 2 & 3 wires which were working and got spark out off the 1 and 4, but not the two and three. So I knew that right side coil was working. And all the wires/pugs were fine.
So basically, left coil was is not sending spark to the plus there were attached to. So then I switched the wires outgoing to the good Coil side (right) from CDI to the left side coil, instead of the right side...... boom goes the dynamite, and we have spark!
So here is where I am at, I have both coils working if they are hooked up to the cdi wire that is red (right) but if they come out of the orange, left side, no workie.
I measured the voltage coming in and out under power and coming out the orange is 8v and the red (working) is 10v this is not running, just key on, and they both have the same coming in , 3v.
So, my conclusion to all of this is this. I bought the bike running, with a bad battery, and crossed generator wires, but the coils were decent. I put a new battery fully charged, started it, revved the motor, and blew out the head/dash lights, killed what was left of the weak coils, and blew out half the CDI. Remember, wit the wires crossed the current went directly to the motor/electrical components ans skipped the fuse box. I have since switch the wires and the fuses will interrupt all functions if i pull then. so that is all fixed, lights too.
I would like to put another CDI on the bike now that all is well, the bike has no shorts or drains etc, just to make sure, before I go buy another one. If anyone knows anyone with an early fz750/700 too I believe, I would love to pop it in and be sure. I just don't know what else it could be.
If this is what the problem is, my 750 dollar FZ will be closer to a grand. But at least is has a new battery and upgraded coils .
So if I knew what the output on a stock CDI should be, and if 2 less volts mattered at all, or if that was even a valuable test, i could proceed. I just dot want to spend major bucks for a CDI and have it not fix the problem.
Anyone know what the year CDI boxes will fit my bike. I.e. 1987-8? fz700 or 750 etc? what is compatible if I search for one.
And thanks for all your help guys. Sorry I cut into the box. But is was nice to be able just to switch plugs and connectors to prove both coils were working and that the Orange is not putting out the volts as the red.
without having to move the coils and wires round.
Sorry if i sounded rude, I tend to be a tad terse in print, and i dont know why?
