Has anyone on here done the 911 conversion? I have ,I believe, all the parts needed to do the job but need to know what's involved.

Hiya Number6, I had a 911 engine in the early 90's (I've still got it but its in my loft now) and the conversion involves fitting 1000 genesis barrels & pistons mainly, but it depends on what model FZ engine you're using. If you've got an early Pure Sports model then you'll have to fit conrods from the later genesis engine as the conrods are 1.5 mm longer. I did a write up in a bit more detail on FZ750.com if you want to look, its under the 'engine' tab and dated 19/5/10 in ''another 911 question''. Hope it helps.

Hi Number 6, why, after 25 years would you want to a 811 conversion? If you want a bike to perform better why not buy and '03 R1 (should be able to pick one up for £3000) ? It would work out a lot cheaper and would hold it's price. If you convert a perfectly good LC750 to a 911 you will lose the originality and the value will depress so stick the money into a 'newer' R1. HOWEVER, if you have a high performance cylinder head going begging one of the guys on here is entering the 2011 Manx Grand Prix on an FZ750 and he will be up against 'works' bikes such as Michael Dunlop's Suzuki XR 69 (which isn't an 'old' bike but a brand new build by all accounts) so why not offer it to Kenny for a reasonable price? His handle on here is anoldmanreturns Regards John

think you might be missing the point of why most of us buy & modify older bikes John. Maybe number6 doesn't want an 03 R1? If he is going for originality then he would be a better man than me using a tuned engine in an FZ frame with stock suspension & brakes!

As far as I'm concerned if someone overtakes me on an R1 then it wouldn't mean much because they would be on a better bike, but if I could overtake someone on an R1 then it would give me a mega hard on because I'm on a bike that is nowhere (theoretically) as good as an R1 or other plastic rocket, THAT was the whole point of turning my bike into a 911 in the first place and later putting a 1000 genesis engine in the bike, i.e. to bring my bike up to a standard that is better than standard. Don't get me wrong coz I'd love an R1 but I'd love it more to be able to overtake an R1 on my 25 year old FZ and that's why I've modified my bike. One thing that I forgot to say originally number6 is that you've got to open up the crankcases (Dremel and grinding discs probably) to accept the 1000 barrels but if you've tried it already then you'll already know.

I don't think Ive missed the point at all.... and as for wheaty's comments on being able to overtake an R1 or similar ...I remember being at the IOM MGP around 1980 and there was a guy there saying something like: ''Mike Hailwood could beat these lot on a Raleigh Wisp'' so in my opinion rider ability (and guts) is worth more than tuning. That said, I have nothing against getting a tatty old wreck of a 2mg and giving that the full works, chassis as well as engine tuning and making a 'giant killer' but when you look at number6's bike it is a Very Special bike already and to me seems such a waste to 'adulterate' it when it wouldn't cost any more to bring a tatty old bike to the same standard. Am I making sense or is it time for another Guinness???

I agree with Wheaty (that`s a first then) I managed to upset a guy who was riding a 2005 R1 at Mallory on my FZ, he couldn`t believe that a lightly modifed 25 year old bike with a stock 750 motor could get anywhere near him let alone keep trying to get past, yes he was loads quicker down the straights but try stopping a 230 kg bike at the end of it. He packed up his bike n threw his toys out of the pram after that . It`s not what you have got, it`s how you use it & how you care to enjoy it.
