As near as damn it FZ standard forks are 39mm diameter. TRX, FZR600 (foxeye), thundercat etc are 41mm so would require a stem swap. Even FZR1000 Genesis (non exup) are 41mm but the top & bottom yokes are a straight swap for your FZ items. Hope that helps.

I have a set of thundercat yokes bolted into my FZ,straight swap, the bearings are the same as is the stem length. You do need to trim back the rad cover though so the forks miss. Thundercat forks are also the same length so you also keep the same ride height & do not suffer from ground clearance probs.

If you can lay your hands on a 1FN set of forks they are air assisted which was a first back in the mid 'eighties. Then all you do is whan you fill up with fuel go to the aircompessor and pump 'em up to how hard/soft you want them.

I remember some of the Kawasaki forks being like that, such as the GTs

To be blunt, the original equipment is going to be lacking in the performance department now, even if you find stuff in tip top condition. As you have mentioned "competition" I would suggest replacement suspension front & back with slightly more modern equipment. Spares will then be easier to obtain too. Same goes for brakes if that really needs to be said! ;D

The oe forks do have air assistance with a maximum of about 7psi in them. It doesn`t make that much difference to the preload all it will do is introduce a bit more air in to the fork which will blow fork seals & can cause problems with rebound damping in the fork leg by producing too many air bubbles within the oil. Use later & better forks, you know it makes sense.

What year thundercat can we use the yokes and forks from?
I'm a motorcycle noob, so bare with me here.. does changing the forks mean having to run a different front wheel?

The only yokes I know of which are a direct fit to the FZ headstock are from the FZR1000 Genesis (non exup). not saying others don't fit, I just haven't tried any others. I have late FZR600 forks in my FZ which are 41mm & the same length as thundercat, TRX850 forks. can't see why you would still want to use the FZ front wheel if you have upgraded the forks & I can't see it being an easy option either. Matching wheel for more modern forks will allow for 17" tyre & much better choice of brakes.

I need to find a good diagram to reference for all these part names that are being thrown out there. I think I'm getting confused between triple tree and yoke/yoke plate... either my ignorance or maybe the language used here in the USA is different. So what, exactly, do I need to get off a FZR600? The triple trees, forks, and then the wheel, axle, rotor and caliper? Can I use parts all the way up to the 99 model year? Sorry, I apparently need my hand held through this. Never messed with suspension on a bike before. Since my forks need a rebuild I'd prefer to just upgrade them to something newer with better performance. Appreciate it! Kirk
