Has anyone any idea what could be clunking on the front end of my bike? Whenever I brake or go over a bump it makes a loud knocking noise. The steering head bearings have been checked and it's not them. It's driving me nuts!!!!!!

Do you have old mirrors? The weights that damp vibration in them can come loose.....

I just actually changed the mirrors today, but the clunk has been there a while. I'm convinced that it's the steering head bearings but I've had two mechanics check it and they say not. If the front forks are low on oil would that do it? It sounds like something is loose and that is quite worrying!!!

I've experienced this a couple of times with FZ forks. Check it's not then pads or calipers - if not it could be the bushes on the bottom of the fork stanchions. Unfortunately these are not available separately from Yamaha, they come with the stanchions . There may be aftermarket replacements available?

Do you have a different front wheel, If you are using a 17" wheel with the brembo type discs check the rotors to see if there is free play in there. Mine does it.

The wheels are standard on the bike, so I don't think it's that. I'm convinced I can feel it when they're doing it too, bu that could be my imagination. I'm going to change the brakes and try it, and if that doesn't work then I'll change the forks to eliminate those. After that it's the top end. I wanted to take it a run yesterday, but the clunking worried me so much that I decided not to. As if the front end falling of would matter???

Hi Tomster, my '87 FZX clunks when I brake or go over a bump. It really does your head in. I reckon with mine it is the oil is either to low or lost it's damping ability.

Here is one to try...I had a similar problem on a race bike, sounded like the head bearings but checked everything out and all ok..I even changed bearings and races as the knock was still there....in the end it was........................................................
Top yolk 'hole' was worn and the knock was the top yolk moving on the spindle arghhhhhh

That would kind of make sense. Thanks for your ideas. I still haven't managed to strip the bits off to check it out, as my caravan has been eating my time, but I've bought some fork oil and I'll get to the bottom of it yet!!!

tired springs in the forks, old oil. i put new springs and 15 weight oil in and in made it all well again. Forks were diving so bad the mud guard was hitting a fairing brace that some one had put in as the fairing was missing the v piece. But now i have got exup forks on it. will be selling all the standard stuff soon.

Dropped the forks out today and my problem became evident straight away. The top yoke was loose. No wonder it was clunky. You couldn't tell with the forks in and I'd even had it on a rolling road to test the front end and the guys in the shop didn't know what it was. Oh well. Fork seals now. Frigged them to get it through its MOT and then I'll change them. I must get the Pure Sports on the road next then I can strip and rebuild this one so it doesn't look like a mobile scrap yard, even though it performs so well.
