Hi All, Thought I'd document the build process of my FZ750T as I slowly and as cheaply as possible turn it into a functional Pre89 class race bike. I'll be doing all the work myself to save $ and because working on bikes in my workshop is my happy place away from the 5 kids ;D The plan is to have it look like the Eddie lawson 85/86 bike, minus dry clutch and factory parts. So far have fitted FZR400 17 inch front wheel, 280mm discs and 4 piston calipers. All new bolts, new fork brace from 8mm alloy. New wheel bearings, steering head bearings, fork seals and progressive springs. I was fitting an FZR 18 inch rear to save $ but realised that I was wasting time with an 18 and its tyre choices. Managed to find a 17 x 4.5 rear rim from a 92 GSXR400RR which has a similar pattern to the FZR front. Running a 160/70 soft slick. Have fitted suitable bearings and made spacers to run the stock FZ axle. Other parts on their way to me at moment: 1989 FZR1000 race tail piece, 85/86 shape one piece race top fairing, complete mint gear box cluster( to fix lunched top gear in bike) , Venhill braided brake lines and clutch cable. Pics of progress below. Cheers Red

Cheers Graham Bit more progress.... 85/86 race fairing arrived, new screen fitted. Nicer IMHO than the 87 fairing. Venhill lines and clutch line arrived, nice workmanship and half the price of local options thanks to our strong exchange rate. New 530 chain and sprockets, 2T more 46t rear to improve acceleration on our tighter tracks. I made an adapter plate so I can fit the stock FZ rear disc to the GSXR wheel. Low km gearbox to replace the dodgy one in the bike now. Re oiled and re-gassed late 90's Showa rear shock test fitted. Its no Ohlins but has a remote reservoir, adjustable rebound, compression and preload so hopefully will be a budget improvement over the sacked out stocker. 10mm longer than stock which combined with home made dog bone has increased ride height approx 30mm at rear. Looks like I've cocked up with the calipers and they cant be fitted properly with full bite. So having to suck the sav and find some cheap bluespots. More parts on the way - billet alloy 39mm clip ons. Still waiting for FZR tailpeice. Cheers Red

Couldn't find any Bluespots in NZ or on Flea bay in my price range. Got a good deal locally on a set of 93 Fireblade 4 pot nissins with a rebuilt master cylinder. Made the mounting plates today, quite pleased with the results. The 8mm alloy plate fitted nicely between the caliper and fork mount giving a clean result. Venhill lines fitted up nicely to the CBR master cylinder. Cheers Red

Cheers Guys I'll keep the engine stock other than intake/exhaust and tuning for the development stage. I need the motor to be reliable to keep within my budget and I'm mid pack at club level so theres no trophys at stake. Might try and bump compression a little when I fix the gearbox and fit rings. This will be my first bike on slicks so I'm hoping that will give me a lift in pace. An exup thou top end is definitely in the long term plans but I'll have to be patient for a good one at the right money. Fairing is from Just Fairings here in NZ, all credit to the guy, workmanship is really good, fits well. Cost was NZ$450 so not to bad. www.justfairings.co.nz/cms1/includes/languages/english/html_includes/racefairings.phpProspeed you obviously still have friends over here, I saw a link to your website on the signature of a guy on the Kiwibiker forum couple of days ago. Yeah Red - i'm also a member of Kiwi Biker Forum . I have a small independant repair shop here in the states and ship new or used parts fairly often back there for folks who have trouble finding stuff in NZ . I lived there a long time and really miss the place . I get back there when i can but all the rest of my family live in Aussie now . If you're building a pre '89 postie you may know some of my old mates already - Kevin 'bubbles'Grey - he runs nzpostclassics.org.nz , Lawrence 'robbo' robinson or Dave Freeman to name a couple . Where abouts in middle earth do you live?. Keep up the good work - you got me motivated enough to buy some old flatslides that need a rebuild last week !.

Hi Red, so you have a Yamaha Chassis & engine; Honda Brakes and Suzuki wheels! Just need some Kawasaki bits then you would have a Yamahondaki...... I am confident that you have got the best of ll worlds and will be surprised if you don't win any club races. John from Liverpool

Well actually I turned down spacers from an old Kawi to fit the rear wheel ;D so I'll have to start looking for euro parts now to make a united nations bike. ;D Would have liked to keep the DNA all yamaha but price rules at the mo. Prospeed, I live in Christchurch. We tend to keep to ourselves a bit down here when it comes to postie racing. Our rules are a bit more relaxed than those North Island Boys. I recognise the names but doent know them. This project is about to hit a bit of a wall I think. Some of you may know Christchurch has been hit with some big earthquakes in the past 9 months and aftershocks are still continuing to knock my bikes over and damage shit. The Government has decided our suburb is to badly damaged to rebuild and we are being forced to move out within the next few months. At least they are paying us out for the value of our house but finding a house at short notice along with the 5100 other people also being moved will be fun. Anyway shit happens, hopefully I'll find a house closer to the local racetrack ;D Cheers red

Hey Red, earthquakes are happening all over the place. I live in the NW of England UK and we are having VERY small shocks compared to you guys but none the less shocks. Some are saying it is because man has sucked so much oil out of the earth it is now kicking back as a reaction to having no lubricant in brtween the tectonic plates. Makes you wonder?

Cheers Red Maybe I should re-phrase that last comment...what we have been having are very light tremors-nothing anything like an earthquake-i suppose the comparison could be a bit of a wobble at 20mph on a moped on a corner and Paul Orritts legendary tank slapper down brah hill in the 1996 TT....
