Just picked up a couple FZ750's ('85/'86) and will be doing a little updating and light modding... Well, first I guess I'll have to get at least one of them running... I've got a couple of Yamaha XS's, XJ's, and a MaximX, which shares the Genesis head, so I guess FZ's were a natural progression. I'm hoping I'll have some spares to sell to help finance this little project too. Anyone need a NOS '85 fuel tank?

Hi new guy from Ottawa. Welcome aboard and we hope to read all about your exploits with your FZs and browse a few of your photos.

You 1fn doesn't look as though it needs too much work but the other one is more like what a lot of FZs look like now (including one of my own) I love some of your other Yams too and they take me back quite a bit. I think you've taken the weight saving thing a little too far on the bike in the eigth pic tho. Love the one in the snow, too

Well the picture of the 1fn was the catnip the guy posted in his for sale ad. The pic's about 6yrs old and the last time it was plated was '03... I think the black one's actually in better shape, but the harness has been hacked. That'll be some good fun... And yeah... I take a lot of flack for that MaximX in the Snow pic. If there were a Maxim Aid Society, I'm sure I would've been reported by someone!

Two things: the clutch plates are probably stuck together, so will need stripped and cleaned. The other thing is to make sure you're looking for the neutral in the right place. There was something funny with mine when I got it and I think the gear linkage had been fitted wrong so I was looking for neutral at the wrong end of the box.

Yeah as Tom says, sounds like it's in gear to me.

I wouldn't be in a hurry to strip it down. If you can get it plated and use it those little ideosyncracies will sort themselves out. That is one great original bike with the now very rare original 4 into 2 exhaust system. Get the oil and filter changed an never mind 4000RPM see what the old girl does around 8000 rpm...

And make sure it's in second when you hit 8000 revs. If you've got a good un' it'll get to just shy of 12000 before you need to clog it up a gear.
Make sure you hold tight.....

Was definitely in neutral, bike rolled fine. Light just wasn't coming on... Seem to be intermittent though. I was getting neutral light previous to starting it and next morning was working fine too. A little electrical gremlin in a 25 yr old bike? Who knew?!!? Anyway, I'll probably dump a half can of Seafoam into the crankcase before I change the oil and put the other half through the carbs for good measure. That should shake something loose! And the exhaust is actually in really nice shape for what it is... A few scratches and spots of rust here and there, but it's solid. I'm not really into show-bikes anyway, as you may have guessed from my others.

I'm not sure if you know this, but it can be a pig to get older bikes into neutral. It may be in neutral but just not quite in the right position to activate the switch.
Try putting it into neutral from second rather than first.

Try putting it into neutral from second rather than first. Oh, I'm well familiar with finicky "old" bikes. And yeah... I tried the gentle toe-up from first, the short jab down from second, trying to trick it by starting in third and clicking down two in quick succession... That green light just don't wanna come on! We'll see. Busy week at work and I'm away this weekend so might not be able to get into it for a while, but I'm hoping some Seafoam will strip any gunk out of the clutch that might be killing my neutral buzz!
