Well............... that shit-heap of mine has done it again to me today, and flattened the battery once more while I was riding it. It hasn't been any problem riding it to and from work, but it was such a nice day I thought I'd take it for a bit of a spin. You know the type of thing; normal people do it on normal bikes. Not for me though. On the way back I stopped at some traffic lights and it died on me. It re-started but wouldn't idle so I had to keep it above 4,000RPM and thought I'd make it home but two miles down the road it died on me. Just to compound matters................I dropped it on the trailer and dented the tank right in too, so I'm afraid we're back to not talking again. Does anyone have any experience of a fault like this? I'm wondering if the rectifier breaks down when it's too hot and fries the battery? Without an ammeter on it all the time there's no way of knowing when the problem manifests itself so that I can quickly do some detective work. I could easily be getting rid of this bike as it has just been bad Karma from day one.

my fireblade does this Tom or it used to. hoping I have cured it by replacing the regulator/rectifier unit.

I haven't changed the rectifier, but it had two different alternators on last year and the regulator is part of that. I haven't called it a twat as that would be inappropriate, but it has made a twat of me a few times!!!

check you have good earths first,if unsure put on an extra one. Double earthing often helps many matters & works on most stuff. You will need to check charging rate at rest, idle & running. You are looking as the manual says between 13.5-15.3v any more than 15 though & you are on the verge of boiling the battery. Sounds like reg/rec to me though. You could always buy my FZ though, look at some photos in the track day thread.

Thanks very much for your help, fellas. My other FZ is in the shop at the moment and I was just riding this until I got it back. I'll go and check a couple of things out but it's pissed me off so much that I can't really be bothered with it. No wonder people don't buy older bikes. What annoyed me the most was the three days of my week off I dedicated to getting the heap of shite through its MOT . I'll finish tidying my garage then I'm going to strip it back to the frame and rebuild it with a Kenny Roberts paint job.
