Hi Rich May I take the opportunity of Welcoming you to the forum! Have you taken the leads off and stuck a plug on them one at a time to confirm a spark? I don't think it would be easy to mistakenly put the leads on the wrong cylinders as the leads probably wouldn't fit making it obvious that they are the wong way (the long ones would stick out too much. I have a full manual which is scanned and on dvd in PDF ready to print off the apropriate pages which is great as it keeps the original manual clean for bedtime reading...... PM me if you want one.

Hello rico1975. Thank you for registering. You appear to be our 100th member. If you're happy with the fuel side of things & that you have a spark at all 4 pots then I would suggest a compression test. at 20K it shouldn't really need shims but if it's been stood for 6 years there may be an issue with valves seating properly now. Good luck with it. Some of the members on here have many years of experience when it comes to FZ's. You are in good company.

This may be a stupid question, but when you say you've cleaned the carbs out have you scraped all the shit left by evaporating fuel out?
Just asking because you say it's been stood for 6 years.
I've seen jets (originally at least a mil diameter) so gummed up that they are completely blocked. Even a little bit of gumming will make the mixture so lean that it won't fire.

Hiya Rico, It sounds that you have got a fair bargain there, and I think that Crusty has hit the nail on the head as to where to start. In my experience with FZ's (have owned mine for 23 years) the fuel in the carbs congeals quite easily and blocks the tiny pilot jets and because the pilot jets provide the fuel to start the bike then this is where I would concentrate my efforts first. It may be a good idea to update your profile with regard to where you live as there may be other members nearby who could help you out. Good luck.

When I was about 12 my dad bought me a moped to play on the fields with. When the carb got clogged up with dirt he told me that you need to run the bike to full throttle then choke off the intak so all the crud is sucked straight through the jets and into the combustion chamber and away.... That advice has stuck with me for bar near 40 years now. Here is me using the same methodolgy on a bike I bought which had been stud for abot 5 years in the prevous owners garden. I have to say that this IS THE FIRST TIME I STARTED IT... www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMoVueaSTWE
