Hi All, I'm interested in your thoughts on the intake set up for my 87 FZ racer. Basically I'm hoping for 95+HP at the rear wheel with just tuning, free flowing exhaust and intake mods.
Am I going to be able to get that with a stock airbox/K&N filter and jetting as required ? This is the cheapest option at NZ$100
Or do I go no airbox, invidual K&N's with a dynojet kit? Is this worth the quite considerable expense (NZ$650) in terms of power gain/other benefits?
I've read conflicting info on pods Vs stock airbox and also that stock the FZ's are pretty sweetly jetted.
Appreciate your thoughts.
Cheers Red

Open stacks or foam filters on stacks will give the best top end power but often make the fueling poor lower down - not usually a problem for racing though. I've been told by several people that DJ kits are a waste of money for FZs - Kenny's MGP thread seems to bear this out. I've heard Factory Pro kits are better and I bought one but haven't fitted it yet. A well designed 4-2-1 pipe and good compression are probably the most important things.

Funny you should mention. I have 2 banks of carbs. 1 is set up with individual pods and a factory pro kit, the other is with a K&N in the box (slightly modified) with a K&N kit (mild). Yoshi 4-1 system, 520 chain with 47 sprocket in the rear. The airbox with mild jets is certainly no slouch. Mid range is most deffinatly better. We're talking 4k - 6k. Pulls OK after that. Deffinatly easier to ride in trafic, or anything that's part throttle. Pods and FP kit is alittle stuttery lower down (still trying to iron that out) and mid not as strong as the airbox, but is still pretty strong. However after 6k it kicks you in the ass and takes off like a rocket. I have a Carbtune and ColourTune (glass plugs to 'see' A/F ratio). Plug chops are nice and tan all across the rpm range. I'd go pods and an FP kit. If you're in North America I have a Vortex 48 tooth Aluminum sprocket, new in package for cheap! (Also many, many spare parts... like 2 more bikes worth).
