Greetings. Are the early air assisted forks a straight swap for the later type? If so, are there any pro's/cons? Cheers, Phil.

I'm just wondering why you are wanting to put the air assisted on? Is it because you have a set handy? It's just that according to what I've been told, they weren't actually that good.

You can fit the older forks but you can't mix and match parts - you have to use the whole lot including the link pipe. I've used both types and agree with Tomster - I preferred the later type.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll get my forks re-chromed.

You'll get a second hand set much cheaper. I might even have a set. How bad are yours?

I bought a pair of 2MG stanchions brand new from Yamaha about 5 years ago. They were only very slightly more than having the old ones re-chromed.

Not too bad really - I'm being a bit paranoid. The one that looks good is the one with the leaking seal so I'm going to try new seals first. Cheers.

The idea of having air assistance in the forks is not to help with the damping as it is only a few P.S.I. but rather to keep the oil down from slopping about and for that purpose the forks are brilliant. If you are keeping your bike original it is well worth having them ground and re-chromed.

Rang Granby Motors re 2MG stanchions. They're still available but £148 each.
