If you don't get one you can probably rescue yours. You can get the cover off by carefully hacksawing round it just above where it goes onto the base with the connector plugs. You can then dry the PCBs and clean them with Servisol AeroKlene (from Maplin, RS components etc.) and a toothbrush. I have done this successfully in the past but I don't have the cdi anymore - I gave it to someone who was racing in Scotland. You can resurrect drowned mobile phones by the same method

How are they different from the other versions? Is it too big a job to do a conversion?

How are they different from the other versions? Is it too big a job to do a conversion? 1AE had two crank sensors, later bikes only one. I've heard you can splice wires and get them to work but I don't know how. The later bikes had different coil primary impedances and a higher rev limit anyway so it's probably not a good idea.
