not been on here for a while, I'm sure you've all missed me I need to remove the exhaust system so I can replace the head gasket. Was expecting possible issues with seized nuts on the cylinder head studs, but they came off without any problems. Unfortunately, the exhaust collets seem to have seized onto the cylinder head studs, and I can't get them off. I've tried copious amounts of WD40 and GT85, but they're still stuck. I guess one option might be to put two nuts on the stud thread (if there's room), lock them together, and use them to try to undo the cylinder head stud, but I'm worried it might just shear the stud if the collets are seized on too tightly? Anyone got any better ideas?

You're already on a winner by getting the nuts off okay, so don't try to remove the studs. If you can use a piece of bar from underneath, and a hammer, give them a sharp tap and this should free them off.

Nice one Tom. I bet you have got a special hammer in your tool box just for that job along with all your other special hammers. ;D

got all but one off now, but I'm thinking I may have to replace some of the studs as they're pretty badly corroded. Any idea where I can get replacements? Will Yamaha dealers stock them?

Unless one of them breaks, I would just clean them up and use them as they are. Because of where they are, and the constant warming and cooling, they often do look a bit rough. If you can run a die-nut down them that will help, if you can't lay your hands on such a thing, then a wire brush will help, followed by a coating of anti-sieze compound.

Seen them on ebay but they were £4.00 a pair + £2.00 postage! I will confess to using all thread as a temporary measure last year which I haven't got round to replacing yet. It meant I could fit my exhaust but out in the field will probably rust faster than a 70s Alfa Romeo/Fiat/Datsun etc.

The rest should clean up ok i reckon PS: I did it! All off now needed blow torch for the final one. Anyone ever replaced the FZ's head gasket before? Is it easier with the engine in the frame, or should I remove it?

Did mine with engine out, easy peasy. Can't comment with engine fitted but I would guess it is less likely to roll around in the frame. ;D

This is on my list of jobs to do. I've got a full micron. Are the short pipes that bolt to the engine easy to get hold of? Mine are rusty as hell and the nut on the studs are so rusty that they might as well not be there
