As I said, sourced the problem with mine to the shims. The trouble is the valves may now be damaged where I ran it without knowing that this was the problem.
There are NO FZ heads for sale in the UK. If the valves are damaged that's it, I won't be able to fix it....
Fingers crossed everyone!

Someone asked me if I wanted a cheap 1988 FZ today - supposedly MOTd and SORNed. Not much money but apart from that I don't know anything about it. I told him to advertise it on here but I can put you in touch if you're interested.

Actually, I've just been checking. At worse I need to replace the valve seats (the tops of the valves won't be burned?)
they're only about £4 each. I'll just need to find someone to rebuild the head for me...
Oh, and it'll be the inlet and not the exhaust valves if that makes a difference

Sorry to hear you're having such problems, Crusty. Clearances would wear over a period of time, so I'm surprised that it became a non-runner over such a short period of time. I'd have thought you would have experienced loss of power and poor running for a time before it finally gave up the ghost???/

I would be surprised if your head was beyond use crusty? I think you've got nothing to lose from stripping it & lapping all the valves in. I would expect that with clearances set you will then be sorted. Some say not to lap them in but if the seats are burnt & they're not seating well then leaving them isn't really an option in my opinion.

I don't think you should get too disheartened yet Crusty, I've not found it too difficult to pick up FZ heads in the past if yours is stuffed. Otherwise there are companies such as the cylinder head shop or SEP in Kegworth that can repair cylinder heads for you. If it helps, I think I've got a table for FZ valve clearances that advises you which shims to use in relation to the present clearances that you have, and I could photo and post it if it helps.

It's going in to be shimed on Friday. I'll decide where to go with it after the outcome of that.
Fingers crossed...
