OK, got a strange one for the group, hoping maybe someones had this happen before. I have been slowly putting my 87 FZ engine back together and have been stopped in my tracks yet again. When I bolted the crankcases back together I couldn't find the 6X140 mm bolt that goes into position 31 on the upper case beside the crankcase vent spigot. After installing my cylinder and head and bolting the rest of the lower end together I've located the previously missing bolt, (it was with the ground wire that attaches to the cases). I tried to drop the bolt into it's place but it wont slide down the hole. I thought maybe I'd dropped something down there before that was stopping my bolt but when I insert a pen cartridge to check the depth of the obstruction it goes in all the way. Sliding the pen down I can feel a step part way down on the forward edge of the hole. It feels like the cases aren't lined up but with the other 30 bolts and numerous dowel pins in place is that even possible? If anyone has run into this during a rebuild let me know how you rectified the problem. At this point I figure I already know the answer, take the engine apart again and do it all again.
Thanks, John
