Hello all, I have an 85 FZ that I have been messing with for a while, in my "spare" time. I have a cylinder that does not seem to be firing thought it is getting a spark. I am assuming that there is a fuel issue? I have just had the carbs off and cleaned. Any thoughts? Please help me if you can I'm ready to ride!!!

Hello Dane. Do you have good compression in the offending cylinder? Could be burned out valve or just time to adjust valve clearances? Is the plug wet with fuel when you take it out?

Hello Graham, Thanks for the quick reply. I didn't think about valve clearance since the engine olny has 11k on it. I will go check the plug and get back with you. And thanks again for the response, I have been following ya'll for quite a while on proboards and 750.com. I hope to start making some progress on this thing. I'll keep you posted.

I would expect valve clearances to be fine at 11K.. . miles or kilometres. Has it only been a problem since you removed & cleaned the carbs or is this the reason for removing them?

Hello Again, I found this FZ for sale for $350 US. It had been in a barn and was filles with wasp and spider nest. Who knows when the last time it had been started. Gas tank rotted out, brakes locked, clutch master and slave leaking...... I took it all apart and cleaned her up, sealed the tank, removed the carbs and did a full cleaning, new battery. Two of the cylinders were not firing so I replaced the coils (old parts from ebay) everything seemed fine then I had to let her sit for a while when work got in the way. It has always run a little rough and rich. She has a Supertrap pipe and who know how the carbs have been jetted ( the plugs are drilled out so I assume jetting for the pipe). Now I"m out messing with it agian number three cylinder is not firing. Spark plug seems dry. I thinking I will pull the carbs off again but looking for input before I go through the time. I have thought about looking for some stock carbs that have not been tinkered with and starting over. I don't really like the Supertrapp anyway, but this was not suppose to be an expensixe project (right!) My goal is to try to make it look like a Kenny Roberts TZ750 (78ish)

For anyone looking at this post the cylinder issue was from the carbs. I had a sticky float and a float bowl gasket that had a hole in it even though it was new.... I cleaned everything again and now she runs fine, a little rough but I can sort that.

Hello Fatbloke, I was looking for the carb balancing thread and did not see it. Maybe you can direct me to it?

HaHa! Made me laugh. Any special tools required?? This is actually my fifth FZ, two 700's and Three 750's. Started roadracing on them in the late 80's and early 90's before switching to CBRs. There were a few other guys out here in Texas racing at the same time maybe you have heard of them. Edwards, Hayden (all three of them), later some kid named Spies.... Only saw them on in the paddock though, once on track they were just a spec in the distance ;(
