It's worth noting that your insurance cover would probably be invalidated by any deviation from factory specs anyway mmm thats a weird one that means if you put non factory tyres , brake pads bulbs fairing panels oil etccc your insurance would be invalid !!!!! my friends race kr1 has a day time only mot that doesnt need a brake light but does need a rear reflector. police have no issues with it ,

If you just think of your bike insurance as a necessary evil to keep you on the right side of the law then you should not be disappointed in the event of making a claim. It would seem they have small print & clauses that enable them to wriggle out of honouring "any" type of claim you try to make. I hate insurance companies with a passion.

There was a story in MCN a few months back about an insurer, Bennetts I think, telling their customers exactly that - i.e. non OE tyres, brake pads or panels would invalidate their policy. I think they later backed down after MCN got on their case. As Graham said, you wouldn't be done for having no insurance but if you ended up making a big claim....? I'd heard different stories about the tail light thing so I contacted the local Traffic Division who told me categorically that a brake light was a legal requirement. Another thing I learned is that there is no such thing as a 'daylight only MOT' - an MOT is an MOT - they just put a note in the advisory section which says 'No lights fitted at the time of test'

i understand the no lights fitted thing. but the brake light thing woudl make competition trial bikes illegal if they are registered and also a some vintage twenties / thirties bike would also be illegal . my experience with the police traffic peeps is they are often unaware of dot rules and regs much to their annoyance when they tried to do me for no front brake light on my GS1000, a front brake light is not a legal requirement on bikes over a certain age and i suppose this could be true for the rear brake light as well if no lights fitted, but a reflector is required though !!!

My understanding is that if it were legal when the vehical was manufactured, it's generally legal now. Check your highway code, there's still hand signals for slowing down.

I've just gone with Bennetts for my Fazer insurance! Despite telling them about the mod's I hope I never find myself in the situation where I need to make a claim. Let's face it, they're all crooks.
