Ok so after about a year of my fz sitting looking sorry for its self after an "accident" fitting a new exhaust I've finally got round to dismantling it with the goal of changing the bottom head.
With some help from my friend graham (not on the forum) so far we've got up to taking off the cam cover before calling it a day. Having never actually stripped an engine myself I thought it was best to enlist a bit of help from someone who has done a fair few. Even with my ineptness we got that far in a little over an hour with no swearing.
So far I'm pleasantly surprised at how well its going, whoever messed with it last didnt seem to over tighten anything and nothing seems to be too corroded that we couldn't unscrew it. The only things I can see so far that may need replacing apart from the head are the spark plugs and the choke cable has a couple of stray strands making a break for it. I may just clean up the plugs (they're not very bad) amd hook up the choke as it is, its not as worring to me as a break cable.
With a bit of luck and time allowing we aim to get back to this situation but with the new head on by this time tomorrow. I just hope the rest of it comes apart as easlily as the first lot.
I did take some reference pictures and will have a look through and post them if they may be helpful for anyone else.

Do you mean the whole head where the cams sit? If so you will need to make sure the crank is set to TDC by removing the inspection plug on the left hand casing. 2 little lines on crank web, pointer needs to sit with one either side of it if that makes sense? There are marks on the cam pulleys that should correspond/confirm TDC if you've got it right. Good luck. Make sure you don't drop anything down the timing chain hole!

Thanks for the heads up.
Acording to the manual there's a t which you can see through the inspection hole that we've now got it lined up. I couldn't see coresponding marks on the crank pulleys but I will definately check for some now that you've mentioned them.
Mine appears to say HIT on it upside down as it passes the window being spun clockwise. This isn't what the clymer manual said but we lined it up to the T as it said.
I'll have a search round to see if there's any info on the web then if all else fails I suppose I could always check it by putting a straw down the spark plug hold and turning it.
Any more information would be greatly appreciated.

A straw? Be a man and stick a screwdriver down the hole...

from memory I think you need to rotate the crank another 180 degrees to find the 2 TDC marks but would have to check.
