I've now started with my rebuild of the 1fn I picked up last November and I'm well underway. Don't be fooled by the picture she was as rough as you like but underneath was a good honest bike. I've had an itch for a updated fz for some time although I have to admit to never even having rode one. My basic project outline was update front and rear suspension and braking, up the performance a bit but keep the original look and feel of the fz and maintain a factory-ish look. I toyed with the idea of fitting a very late r6 front end with radial brakes however having done a similar thing with my Katana I finally decided that the fz would stay rwu. I've set myself a budget of 2.5k and while I realise thats a lot of money that includes the original purchase price and a full respray and at the end of it I'll have something that you don't see on every corner. I don't think anything I am going to do will be ground breaking but hopefully if I give enough details it will show how easy some of this stuff is to do and may inspire others.

2.5K IS a lot but if mine is anything to go by, it will soon get spent! I honestly thought I was doing mine fairly cheap but creeping towards the 2K figure now & still not finished. Really looking forward to seeing this if your Kat is anything to go by.

Yeah like I said 2.5 is a lot of money and when you look at what you can get for that dosh some would probably doubt my sanity. I love building bikes and I love owning something a bit different thats why I go this route.
With any project it's the little unaccounted bits that bump up the cost, a gasket here and some grommets there but I think I've been realistic in my projection especially when you take into account the original cost of the bike £425 and a paintjob at 500.
I'm planning the same with my GPZ900 and my ultimate goal is to have both of them come in on budget and on the road for the summer.

It is a lot of money, but I think the FZ is on the cusp of starting to make money. If you look at bikes from the same era, such as the RG500, they are making 6K for a normal one

I guess but the big money is in original unrestored bikes and thats not for me. If I wanted to invest in something I don't think it would be an FZ.

I know where you're coming from. It's a hobby you enjoy, the cost is almost irrelevant.
Had to look that last word up!

Can't remember exactly what the numbers are but I did note the frame and engine matched but were not particularly early.

Finally managed to pick up the 1000 engine I bought however it's no good because the top crankcase is buggered. It looks like it's been in a crash at some point which ripped the starter out and with it a big chunk of case Good job I hadn't paid for it yet ;D So my options are Throw it in the cut and stick to the 750 Build a 911 out of the two engines. Look for another 1000 motor.

My choice would be to build a 911 using the pistons/barrels in your FZ bottom end. Is yours an early 1FN or later 2MG lump?

I have a set of 1000 cases if you are interested, I am breaking a 1000 engine so any bits you may need let me know.

Alan (wheaty) is the man to speak to but I know that the 1000 barrels & pistons don't fit straight on to the early (your) block. I think your con rods are too short so would be quite a big job. If you're not bothered about originality then a 2Mg motor will accept the 1000cc barrels & pistons. Of course you would need to 1000 carbs & exhaust. Primaries are bigger on FZR1000. Not sure about ignition side but I read somewhere you need the 1000 coils & possibly ignition unit too but not sure why.

Moving away from the engine for now while I decide what to do. First thing I did was strip the bike down earmark what I don't want to keep and get shot of it, I have a limited amount of space so I can't afford to hoard stuff so the front end and rear end now have a new home.
