Hi Ken, I have photographed the coils on a couple of FZ's (3 in all) and the 1FN's are housed inside the 'cradle of the frame in front of the carbs and the later models house them on the outside and a bit down (if you have a 2mg and put the short skirt fairings on the show.....ooooh) However, joking apart, it may be that the powers that be @ YAMAHA decided after feedback that the coils are better suited in a cooler environment-hence the air scoops on the 2MG bigger lower fairing??? As for the earthing, if it has steel which bolts to steel make sure it makes a good connection-scrub off the powder coating if needs be. Right, I can't put photos on photobucket as I am only a mere printer with only 20 years PC/MC experience so I have asked to be your ''friend'' on facebook and I will post the photos on there....

I also wondered about cooling but have had no overheating problems since moving my (2mg) coils to the 1FN position to reduce the chance of crash damage - except when it went on fire that is If it is temperature related I'd now be looking at pickup coils and plug caps/leads.

Pick up coils changed and ready to go back to the dyno this afternoon at 3.30 However, joking apart, it may be that the powers that be @ YAMAHA decided after feedback that the coils are better suited in a cooler environment-hence the air scoops on the 2MG bigger lower fairing??? I have had silar problems on mine I swapped coils it was ok for a while then popped and banged. I know the plug caps can be a bugger too.

Bike is showing 99bhp (98.6) and its too rich also looking like I need to try a different needle.
The standard clock is readin 12000+ before it hits the limiter but dyno says its 11500 ish.
WHAT A RELIEF TO HEAR IT RUNNING AT LAST.
Gavins coils allowed it to rev to 7800 so there must be a fault with the other set. However when Gavins coils were initially fitted the engine reved to over 10000 in the garage but by the time I got to the dyno the missing fault had returned. The only difference between the garage and the dyno was HEAT. I changed the crank pickups the only thing not changed (but checked out ok using as tester as shown in the handbook.
Everything now seems fine just need to sort fueling out.
The carbs are Dynojetted 148 mains and dynojet needles too. Pod filters are fitted.
Going to try standard needles and airbox as well as smaller mains.

Great to see you're getting there now, Ken. Lord knows where you get the patience from. I'd have had a major sulk on long ago!!

Looks to me like the old FZ has been playing hard to get and has suddenly realised that in less than a month she is going to have the time of her life.....doing what she was designed for...BEING RAGGED ROTTEN.

Right Ken, Not had a bad day; set to around 10.30 ish with somewhat of a bad head and managed to get the engine out of the bike by around 12.30. Then I had to go and look at a GPZ 900 on a 'G' with 30k on the clock (going cheap if you know anyone who is into those) Then took kids for a picnic in the woods by the canal (bad idea) Then got back and Humped the engine into the van then got the other engine which was right at the back of my engine shed and Humped that into the back of the van with the other one. Then located the carbs with the trombones on (they look clean enough but the butterflies are seized so I have sprayed them with WD40) put them in the van with the other carbs and a set of coils. Locked the van up and typing this update. Have to say after humping the engines my feeble back is twinging a bit.....blinking awkward to lift those engines especially for an office wimp like me! Looking at both engines they look dry and unmolested so hopefully one or the other or both will be useable. In the worst case scenario of both engines being no good I have another two to go at but going from looks on the outside and knowing the history of all of them I reckon these are the best bets. Anyhow, will be setting off around lunchtime tomorrow so should be with you by around 2-3pm. John

Back from my second home the bike is now 99bhp and 53.5flb...still got the dip at 8000 revs (about half the dip it was on first run) and the engine revs real fast now. Dyno guy says slick on rear having an effect as are the dynojet stepped needles. Alternate dynojet needles on order and changing the rear tyre.
